I\'m an RTV believer now

My 7 year old daughter was on spring break last week and Friday we had daddy daughter day. I needed to get a part for my lawnmower at the Deere dealer so we went there first. After we left we were passing the Kubota New Holland dealer and I asked her if she wanted to see the Kubota Gators. OK, if I had said UTV she would have given me one of those blank stares.
We were seating in the seat and she was pretending to drive. A salesman comes out and starts talking to us. I tell him that I would be upgrading from my 6X4 Gator eventually and I had heard a lot about the Kubota. This is the same dealership that was kind of snooty and non negotiable when I was shopping for a tractor a year and a half ago so I wasn't expecting much. This guy was knowledgeable and friendly. I was expecting the, "you have a Gator, those things are terrible" comment, but instead he tried selling the RTV on it's merits and didn't run down Deere or any other makes that I mentioned looking at. I give the salesman an A+.
I asked if I could take a test drive. He said sure. This place is surrounded by asphault so there really isn't any off road to test it on. I am accustomed to hitting the starter without warming the glowplugs on my Deere tractor so it kind of caught me off guard when this diesel didn't want to start. I slowed down and hit the glow plugs and it fired up. I stood on the pedal and she took off. I knew from reading all the posts on here about how the Kubota comes to a quick stop. I really braced myself for a hard stop. I let off the pedal and it actually seemed to coast briefly and then WHAM, she stopped. Wasn't too bad, but would take some getting used to. The dealership has a big lot so I could just about reach top speed running around the store. I felt like a kid riding his first go kart. I had a grin plastered on my face. When my wife and I are shopping for a new car or anything requiring negotiating, I always tell her not to act to eager. I am glad she was not there. When I got back around to the front of the store I pulled in and shut it down and told the guy I loved it, I wanted one and how much do they cost? I did explain to him that it would be closer to Spetember or October before I would be buying.
I had thought that the Kubota was too much vehicle for a UTV, but it was so nice. I can admit when I am wrong and I was about this thing. Now I need to look at what I can sell so I can get an RTV. He priced a Realtree camo RTV with the hydraulic dump for $11,200 out the door, how does that sound? Another thing, they had 2 RTVs, one orange and one camo. The seat on the orange one was harder than the camo one. My daughter and I were sitting on the orange one when the salesman came out and I mentioned the hard seat and then when I sat on the camo one the seat was much softer. The saleman acknowledged the difference. Anyone else have a hard seat?

Re: I\'m an RTV believer now

I also am a guy who doesn't have anything bad to say about the Gator's I've owned in the past, but like the RTV better. I too was shopping for tractors when I thought I'd test drive the RTV just for the heck of it. I had no problems with my Gator and had no thoughts of trading or getting rid of my Gator. Heck, I've had a 4X6 Gator for the last 5 or 6 years!

It came down to the fact that I liked the feel of the RTV better and, even though I would have never believed it, I think the RTV seems to be built a little stronger.

Glad to hear that you liked the RTV. I certainly don't have anything bad to say about the Gators, but I'm well pleased with my RTV even after going through the first year bugs with it. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I never noticed that. And for some reason, now that you mention it, yes the seat is hard. For the work we do and the on-off time, I guess my butt does not care. I know my back feels pretty good on the RTV. I'll take back over butt anyday.

Hmmmm.

Re: I\'m an RTV believer now

yea your right. My seat id hard too. Maybe they (Kubota) figured that peopel wil be harder on a worksite seat then a came and made the camo softer for my comfort??

Re: I\'m an RTV believer now

Brent,
Sounds like dejavu. I owned a 6*4 gator as well. After hearing so much about the Kubota I had to try it. I had to sneak it in under the cover of darkness, I am deep in Deere country /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. WOW what a difference. The power steering was terrific. Have you ever tried to steer a 6*4 in the snow /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif? The hydro and the stopping was great for me, we have a lot of hills. The 6*4 was like riding a roller coaster on the down hill. The old get in,sit down and hold on! The Gator served me well. I feel the Kubota will serve me even better. Needlless to say there is orange now mixed in with all that green! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Re: I\'m an RTV believer now

Kubota makes a very high quality product. I've had several Kubota tractors over the years, starting with an L210 in '72 and they all performed very well. The RTV shouldn't be an exception.

Lat August I traded my '01 Gator 6x4 Diesel for a new Diesel 4x4 HPX Gator. You can't compare the two, they're entirely different machines. The 6x4 was good and reliable, but the HPX is a much more highly refined machine. It's faster, smoother and stops quicker.

Interesting at best!! No doubt about it! We have 7 new just assembled ones as soon as I can i'll go sit in each!! Can't say I ever noticed a diff in the seat,, perhaps one was in the sun and had warmed a bit!!
I'll report back with my findings!
Personaly on the one I own I wish the back angled rearward 2 degrees! just haven't had time to mod that yet!!

Not likely, they were both facing west and were parked under cover at the front of the building at 10:00am. So no sun was hitting them. Maybe the seat foam was from a different batch. It is one thing I will be on the lookout for when I buy one.

Re: I\'m an RTV believer now

Guess I'm a hard-a$$ since I've never noticed the seat firmness. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Had fun with my RTV this weekend. I was using Bob-de-Cat (skid steer) with the root grapple on front hollowing out some hundred-year-old vines covering a bank. It was taking forever to haul the roots and vines from the bank to the burn pile. I enlisted my lovely bride to back up Kubby - her name for the RTV - and I plopped a full load of weeds into the bed. She then hauled it away to dump. I swear it looked like one of those Asian photos of a skinny riding a bicycle with sixteen-hundred bottles, cans or whatever strapped to the seat. Vines, roots and limbs were hanging off all sides and piled higher than the top! I was laughing so hard she got mad and threatened to quit. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It did speed things up greatly and used several gallons less of #2.

I love my RTV.

Re: I\'m an RTV believer now

I looked in the RTV parts manual and there's only one stock number listed for the seat. Actually there was an original number and when I looked this up on the Tractorsmart web site it's been replaced with a new number. I think that might be for the production change they made when they added the large rubber cover flap between the seat and the engine compartment. Maybe the new seat number is harder/softer than the original but I don't think there's different seats for different models.
