As a new tractor owner I am curious about the many implements available and have a number of questions.

First implement will likely be tiller. I considered a harrow as a less expensive option but after reading some discussions I think the tiller is a better fit for the tight areas and slopes of my little piece of heaven.

I have been unsuccessful finding places to rent implements here in Central MA and have startiung looking for new or used deals. MF has one for it, but it is a bit pricier than some I have seen at Northern or ebay new and quite a bit pricier than used.

I Thought I could use pretty much any Cat 1 implement considering the HP rating. But have seen discussions of shortening driveshafts.

Can I use something like the Nortrac 48 inch on this unit off the shelf? Is it a decent unit? Or any other 48 inch tiller?
Or do I need to bite the bullet for the MF unit
Thanks for any advice
Dan

Danny, I don't know if you have a TSC store near you but you can get a King kutter for probably $1100 or less which by most are considered a good unit...There are a couple dealers on this site that have tillers to fit your needs as well and they will ship it to you... 48" is the right one for your tractor and you won't be sorry you got it ;) How much is the MF tiller? They probably just get a woods or landpride and paint it red with a couple stickers on it...

Well that should get the ball rolling

OH BTW, I don't know anything about the nortrac , but my spider sense is tingling so I would stay away from it... I would have to see it in person the check how heavy duty it is...

My guess is that you would need to cut the shaft on most new tillers because I am led to believe that the longer shaft is provided to cover tractors with longer arms on the 3pt. My dealer told me that King Kutter did supply a long and short shaft in the past but now only supply the long.

It is not a big deal to cut the shaft since it is 2 piece that slides apart and you put each pc. in the vise and cut it off (my sawzall worked perfectly). If the shaft is too long you have plenty to work with so you can cut off a little extra to make it easier to put on the pto.

I can highly recommend the King Kutter. I don't own one but my brother has a 60" that I have used and it does an unbelievable job. They do have a 48" and it would be much easier to deal with and the recommended pto hp would be within the specs of our tractors. Just so it is wide enough to extend beyond the tires and I think the 48" just makes it. With the 60" I had to put a couple 12" blocks in the FEL for extra ballast beyond my foam filled front tires.

Check with Carter and Carter. He offers 2 very fine machines and will take care of the driveshaft shortening problems. I have found that the 58" tiller works great and I highly recommend Carter and Carter to deal with.

Half - Are you running the 58 inch with a GC series? Is it the MR-160? It looks like it is right on the edge the HP requirements. Do the MR series have an offset option?

DannyLobster,
Just to throw in a personal testimony, I have a MF 1523 which has the same engine as your GC2300, and I have the Carter and Carter MR-130(49") Tiller, and the tractor has plenty of power for that tiller. You could probably get the 58" tiller and be fine. Worst case scenario is you'd simply have to travel at a slower ground speed.

I have a BMB? 48" tiller for my GC2300. I had it with my old Bolens (Iseki) G174. Hooked up perfectly and I didn't have to cut the shaft. I've also hooked up my 4' finish mower and 4" shredder. I didn't have any problems hooking any of these up or hooking the shaft. these implements are circa 1981 or so.....

ps...the 4' tiller works awesome. It's a perfect fit for this size tractor. I tilled a 16' x 16' garden for a neighbor. It was about 1' deep and took me the better part of 10 minutes or so

Yes, I am running the Mr-160 with the Gc2310 and it does a great job. You cover both tire treads with the tiller so you don't have to worry about an offset, which it doesn't have to answer your question.
