Imported fish

We used to catch a fair number of Lake Erie sheepshead while fishing for perch or walleyes. They look alot like the fish in your pic minus the stripes. I don't know if anyone eats them now, I know not many did when I was kid. I think the Fish and Game people want them kept if caught now since they were over taking the walleye, but not sure about that. In the Spring and early summer we would take some home and bury them in the garden for fertilizer. A decent sized one is fun to catch since they put up a good fight for a while.

I used to go out perch fishing with my Grandpa and Dad in the 1950's. We used a 16' metal row boat with a 7 HP Martin outboard motor. We could fish with spreaders - a springy wire on a single leader with a worm baited hook at each end. It was not unusal to pull up two perch at a time. There was no limit, or it so high it didn't matter. They aren't big fish, so it takes a mess of them to make a good meal. People skinned and filleted them, then deep fried in batter usually. I really enjoyed eating those since they have hardly any fish oil taste :)

Fresh water sheepshead = poor man's lobster.

There are limits on perch, now.

Any time you buy food from any place you take the risk of not knowing how it was handled. Eat at your own risk. :licking:

We have several lakes and rivers nearby that have signs up warning not to eat more than 8 ounces of fish per month from these waters. Pollutants from several sources have contaminated the water, so even some of our fresh caught fish are not safe.

I saw a study from some place that said the average germiest public place found was a school teacher's desk. My wife teaches 9th grade science. She keeps sanitizers and wipes handy for the kids to use as they want to, and she wipes down everything after each class when she can.

When I lived in FLA there were warnings going up about mercury in the water. Eating of fresh water fish was supposed to be limited to healthy people and if you were sick, pregnant or young you should not eat a Bass.

So what was the source of mercury? When I left the state they still did no know. Some blamed the coal burning power plants. Others said it was sugar cane operations Sugar cane made some sense to me because much of the water in South Florida flowed through the fields or had water from the fields mixed into the local supply. But the problem with that idea was there were ponds that had mercury that were not connected to the flow of water from the farms.

The power plant argument did not make sense to me either since some of the ponds with mercury problems were just built and the power plants really where not that close too and/or downwind of the ponds.

Regardless of the source of mercury. Even US fresh water fish is risky. :confused2:

We stopped eating the frozen shrimp that went on sale at the grocery store. I was always a bit iffy about the product given it was from Asia. After a few pounds of shrimp that was just not right we stopped buying.

I also go to a little store run by a Japanese lady that sells Japanese food. Much of the food in the store was branded by Japanese companies but made in China. I stopped buy the frozen food even though we liked it. I kinda sorta trust that the Japanese companies will be very strict on the quality control but we have not but any of the frozen food in a year or so.

If you like Sushi you might not want to read this.... :D

Besides the Japanese ladies store there is a much larger Asian store a few miles away. They sell live fish in the store. And you smell the fish when you walk into the store. :confused2: Both stores sell clean, butterflied, and cook shrimp just like what you get when you order a shrimp nigri. Defrost, form up some cooked rice and you too can play Sushi chief. They also have my favorite, BBQ eel. It is cleaned, BBQed, frozen in a nice vacuum bag. Cut open said bag defrost in the nuke machine and you too can play Sushi chief.

Shrimp and eel are from China. :(

Course if you believe some people the antibiotics, hormones, etc in our chicken, beef, pig are going to make us sick as well....

Later,
Dan

One of my best memories as a kid was eating beer battered perch my great aunt used to make. Caught in good old Lake Erie. :)
