Such shorn notice, but I sure could use some valuable information from this website if someone is willing to share.

Tree and brush piles are burning as I type this message. They are almost burnt! Dump truck is bringing more loads of clay in the morning.

A rented Deere 650 J LGP dozer goes back, late Sunday evening and just blew a hydraulic line!! Im about 99% sure its the line for the blade tilt. Anybody ever changed one of these? I haven't, and will have to try and fix it in the morning. Any info is tremendously appreciated. About how much will it cost? Any special "tricks?"

Thanks,
Travis R

Pull the hose off and take it to the shop that will build it for you! That way you will have an exact replacement when they are done. Go to NAPA or a hydraulic shop so you know you get good stuff. Don't have any advice about your burning piles....sorry.

Thanks.

I now realize that I left out what I wanted to ask. I know its gotta come off and be taken to Napa or somewhere, but What exactly is it gonna take to get the line off? I think it may be a 1/2 to 1 inch line.

I forgot to mention that you should find out the type of hydraulic oil the dozer thakes in case you leaked so much your tank has gotten low. It will be easy to find the blown hose, just fire her up and start moving things until you see the spray!! This is not a big deal I go through this two or three times a week.

Yes, I know I will have to check the oil. Thanks for the reminder.

I sure hope I can get this thing going again. Its been SO valuable to me. No way I could have done what I have already done without it...

I can't say for sure on your hoses, but most dozers and tractors have a variety of sizes. I've found that 15/16 seems to be a popular size on mine, but heck, it could be anything from 7/8 on up to 1 1/4 inch. Some hose you just put the wrench on them and they come off real easy, others take some serious effort and even beating with a hammer on the wrench to get them off. If the end of the hose is attached to a metal tube, then you will need a wrench that size too. They are always different sizes in my experience.

On a JD 450G that I used for a little while, it's hoses were tucked into the frame and under the floor plates. Getting the hose off was easy, but getting to the fittings was a rather time consuming job.

The hoses just unscrew and then you screw on the new hose. They dont use any teflon tape or anything else to seal them. Just get them as tight as you can.

Sometimes you might run into problems if the shop you go to doesn't have that sized fitting. If not, then you are going to have to find a place with the right size. Napa is usually pretty good, but some of the other auto parts stores who do this can be hit or miss.

Not knowing your hose or fittings, expect to pay from $25 to $45 for a replacement. The hose itself is cheap. What you are paying for are the fittings.

Just be sure to bring the bad hose with you.

It is a rental, call the rental agency. That should be their fix and you should get an extra day for the down time. Actually many agencies would not want you working on their machine.

I could not figure out why the poster wanted to take on the rental places obligation and expenses either.
