Hi all,

My great ol' 1983 Ford 1700 is telling me I should be in the market for a new Hydro control "lever" setup. I have the "2 lever" control today (boom - up/down, bucket - roll up/down) and it's the 'bucket' control that basically ...won't turn off. I've setup a bungie cord at this point to keep the control lever in place so that it isn't constantly trying to roll the bucket up.

Anyhow - I need to get a complete new 'control' setup and curious what brand people here think are good/best? And I also plan to switch to a single "joystick" control.

I'm looking at this one from "BAILEY INTERNATIONAL" and wondering if they're a reputable/reliable brand: Hydraulic Directional Control Valve, 3-Way, 2-Spool, 21 GPM | eBay

Also, I see that these new control levers have "GPM" ratings, which I assume is Gallons Per Minute, and I'm curious what I currently have so I can get the correct replacement.

Lastly, I'm assuming that my current 2 lever setup has 4 hose attach point, (2 in and 2 out), and that the new Joystick config ...may have a different setup? 2 in and 1 out??

If anyone can help me make sure I don't do the WRONG thing, that would be great. Thanks you.

Jay

According to Messicks New Holland (19SW1814) - FORD LOADER 15 & 17 TRACTOR (1/79-12/84) Parts Diagrams , the complete control valve assembly kits run around $2,200...whew. But you might be able to get just the parts you need. Also, you might ask Messicks what the specs are on the valve if you call them. Or, they may know of a joystick that works for your tractor. Not much help but might get you started.

Thank you. Wow; $2200. I thought I read a lot of posts about being able to basically unscrew the hydro lines of one valve setup and just screw in a new one; like the one I saw on ebay.

Your tractor open center or closed? Most joystick valves can be setup for either system. If you have 6 hoses going to it(in, out, and 4 work ports) then just match the valve to your tractor hydraulics and you should be good. If it's more than 6 then it's using power beyond and I'm lost there without a diagram.

I'll try to attach a diagram I got from a Ford/New Holland dealer I called to ask service questions. I believe I have the "6 hoses" you mention, so - hopefully - I can just do as you say and match the valves/hoses...

Any idea how to figure out the GPM I currently have?

That 21gpm is fine. The tractor won't be that high. Your main concern will be if the tractor is open or closed center. More than likely open. On the off chance it's closed you'll need to by the plug for that particular valve.

And I didn't look but, tractordata.com usually says if the hydraulics are open or closed.

I should say, the center of the tractor - where my feet go, where the gear shifters/controls go, is Open. Is that what you mean?

This is essentially what mine looks like:Tractor.jpg

I looked on tractor data but it didn't say.
Open center hydraulics means fluid continuously flows from the in to the out port. Closed center the oil isn't flowing through the valve unless you're using it.
If you want this to work you must find out which hydraulic system type is yours and install the valve to match the tractor.
It will be in the owners manual. If you don't have one call new Holland and ask.
