I'm looking for a small used machine to produce square bales in what is the standard sized square arround here, about 1' x 1.5' x 2.5', inexpensive, and functional, older is fine, pulled by a 2006 Kubota L3830, but I don't even know where to start looking, can someone offer some help?

i would look into any of the older jd (14t,24t) or nh (hayliner 77,68,69, or 273) either pto or pony motor driven will work. they're readily available used for decent prices plus you can still get parts for them either from the dealer or tsc even carries some parts. also check out the ag section on this site, esp if you've never worked on a baler b4 and have any ?'s. good luck

Deere never made a bad small square baler. Most any model, so long as it's in good shape will do. I like the 336 personally.

New Holland built good balers also. My experience with them is with the 273.

Massey #12 or 124 has a good rep.

Parts support for above brands is good. Also, you'll find more experienced help on the internet for above makes, as they're the most commonly used balers.

Since it wasn't posted yet, the standard size of the chamber is 14"x18" and you can make the bales shorter or longer depending on your or your customers needs/desires. Most people keep the bales around 36" long as they stack well at that length.

As for older balers, NH has always had a good reputation but they changed model numbers so often I can't remember what is what. If you find a decent looking NH baler post on here with some info and you should get plenty of information on it.

JD has the 14T which is a good baler also.

However, you can find Massey Ferguson balers for next to nothing as people look at them and since they are not NH red or JD green they are scared of them for some reason. Follow FWJ's advice on which MF models to look at. I almost bought one a couple winters ago for a backup baler but it went for $800 which was more then I wanted to spend at the time and the guy who bought it would have gone higher as for some reason (this guy is a little out there) this guy keeps buying old balers and tractors. He has 4-5 MF square balers all parked outside as well as a couple ancient NH round balers and a bunch of old worn out tractors. I don't think he really knows what he is doing as he bought a farm and now you see him at every auction. Usually he is buying worn out pieces, the MF I wanted was in great condition. It was stored inside its entire life and we had to move a lot of stuff out of the way to get it out of the barn to set it up for the auction.

Oh well, sorry for the rant. I just don't like seeing equipment die in some peoples hands and that guy seems to keep buying equipment and when it breaks he buys another one:rolleyes: :(
