Hello All,

I am the proud owner of a 98 JD 770 TLB with 264 hrs on it. I was using it today and went to go out back on the hill which is a steep grade when all of a sudden when hitting the steepest part the engine started to cut out and no matter how much throttle I gave it nothing happen. It wouldn't stall but rpm's went to idle and lower. After getting my head past thinking I'm going into a stall manuver I gently back the unit back down the hill which I didn't like at all either. SO my question is do these jd's have some sort of safety switch not allowing the unit to operate at certain levels?? Or do you think it was a oil safety from the oil in the sump being at a different angle. I had a Kubota L35 and never did this. I am use to operating on steep banks with other equipment so this has me baffled. Thanks for help

Darin, doubtful there is a tilt switch but my guess is that it is fuel related. On a Kubota L4850 I use after about 45 to 50 degrees up hill the engine will suffer from what appears to be fuel starvation. Thats a pretty steep slope and most folks will never experience it or the fuel problem. I believe the pump must have an issue with the slope and not the fuel being sent to it as no air gets in the line. On the L4850, the tank is in the back mounted up behind the seat. With gravity feeding the fuel filter, there may also be an inability for the pump to have the fuel to pump. My guess anyway, perhaps a fuel pump from the tank to the filter might be in order, Rat...

I concur with the fuel starvation potential. Do you know how much fuel you had in the tank?

Your Operator's manual discusses the safety interlocks (not as a completely seperate issue) and how to overide some of them (for off tractor use, for example).

I couldn't find anything on an "incline" safety switch, nor have I experienced any cutting out on a slope. As the 670 (what I have) and the 770 use the same Operator's Manual, if there was such a safety interlock...it would have been noted in my manual as well.

I'm assuming you did get the manual. If not, try ebay.

Thanks for the help guys and I didn't even think about the fuel starvation thing. I have about 1/2 tank or better in it. Maybe if I try it in reverse I can get up the incline to the smaller slope. I had a oil sentry switch that cut the engine down on a different unit that's why that was the only thing really in my head. But after you guys brought the fuel thing up it makes sense.

I actually do have the owners manual and will read that tonight just to see but like you said they are the same manuals as the 670.

Fuel, or rather a lack thereof, is the first thing that came to my mind, too. One simple way to test that theory is to fill your tank completely and then try the same hill the same way. I hope this helps. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Oops,,, Sorry for not getting back to you on this but was just looking at my past posts and remembered this one.

Anyway all the problem was- fuel- just like was mentioned. Thanks a bunch and that was a great relief after finding this out. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
