Independent PTO

Another newbie question: Is the dual stage clutch on a gear tractor the method for obtaining the independent PTO or is this one of more ways to obtain the independent PTO on a geared tractor?

A lot of independent ptos are activated by a hydraulic clutch pack.

BER there a lot of different types of gear transmissions out there in the tractor market.

This is one area were 2 similar tractors can have different prices because one can have a more or less sophisticated transmission. I can tell you that your best bet is to look at a lot of different machines and ask the dealers a lot of questions. And, of course, test drive the machines to see if they suit your needs.

Thanks for the post. I guess this hyd clutch pack could be engaged/disengaged by different methods. Some might use an electric solenoid and others maybe use a mechanical lever to engage the clutch pack. Would a dual stage clutch also be used with the hyd clutch pack?

I used to operate a ferguson 35 and it had a two stage clutch. The first down pressure on it stopped the tractor and a bit more stopped the pto. I have a jd5300 now and it has a lever that engages the clutch with a lever totally separate from the main transmission. I don't care much for the JD system, but it works. I just replaced the pto clutch in mine and found that to engage the clutch they have a throwout bearing that is actually a throwin bearing. I know it is just a problem with my thinking, but I was surprised to see a system set up this way, having to force the fingers of the pressure plate in to engage the pto, thereby having the bearing under load when the pto is being used.

Here is a good explanation of a Live, independent and transmission PTO. Your two stage clutch is a live PTO, not an Independent.

All of the hydraulic clutchs packs that I have ever seen were activated by solenoid.

BER, I've never heard of a two stage clutch incorporating a clutch pack. The clutch activates a mechanical shaft to drive the PTO, while the shaft is activated by the hydraulic clutch pack on the independent styles. On my Case-IH tractor the independent PTO is activated by a lever which activates a hydraulic valve to send pressure to the clutch pack to activate the PTO. This arrangement allows the PTO to be "feathered" to gently engage the implement. I've never operated a solenoid engaged PTO, so I don't know if it can be gently engaged.

They are not very gentle, at least mine is not, so I never start implements much above idle.
But I do like the independant PTO.

The IPTO on the MF compacts have a stepped engagement.
