Hey fellas. Been awhile since I posted anything, because honestly the tractor has just been sitting. But now I need it so it's a big push to get it up and going. I will be using this thread to hopefully document some of the things I've been doing to help others as a visual guide. Keep in mind that I am not a tractor mechanic. I'm a diesel mechanic, but tractor work is new to me. So far, it's all been pretty self explanatory, nothing too head scratching. I'll try to round up some pics of what's going on and what i've done. Right now it's blown apart into a bunch of pieces, not split apart (next time it will be) but doing a general run through on the systems. I do have a question that I was not able to get an answer to from the manuals I finally received today. I noticed a lot of play on the pinion bearing for the rear end. If I turn an axle shaft, the bearing actually moves in and out of the race, I see that there is an adjustable nut that is split with a lock bolt on it. Parts diagram looks like there is supposed to be a thrust washer between bearing and nut. Has anyone else run into this before?

IMAG0127.jpgJust adding back to the thread. Pulled apart the rear axles the other day. I had a sneaky suspicion that the seals were probably shot, they were. Outter bearings were full of oil. Bearings are shot too. Anyone heard of aftermarket wheel bearings for these? Made up a socket for the axle nut, probably overkill, but that's what I end up doing usually. Ridiculously overkill. otc brand socket number 1923 which is a 2 3/4 6 point socket. cut the drive out of it, used a piece of axle tube that was laying around, I think it was schedule 80 and welded the tube to the socket, drive to the tube and there it is. I think I used 25" of pipe.

Looking good so far, Keep us posted and the pictures coming. I haven't had to get into the axle yet but I'm sure my luck is running out. Are you familiar with motion industries? If anyone is going to have that bearing, they will. Oem wanted $80/bearing for the dozer. I got all 4 bearings, USA Timkens for under $100.

Thanks for the heads up city farmer. I checked them out, but it turns out that amazon is actually cheaper than they are. Motion would be 130 just for two cups and cones. Amazon ended up being about 80. Both are timken. I'm an amazon prime member so two day shipping is free. FYI my particular numbers were 382 and 387. They DO NOT have an "a" or "s" after them. Those particular bearings are easy to find, they fit a gm corporate 14 bolt carrier but are a little different. I'll definitely keep them in mind later on though. Have you had a peek at your pinion bearing before? I think I'm just going to pre load it a little for now and call it good. Find thrust washers when I split it apart for the trans work later.

Here's a picture of mine when I was in there replacing the filters.

Edit: I thought that was going to help you. That's a picture of my 4400 and not the 3000.

Hey that's alright. I can see that there is a thrust washer in there and you don't have 1/8" of endplay like I do. Thanks for taking the time to post. Tore apart my ripper cylinder today, rod is shot, end of it was full of goo too. The list continues......

Got one of the axle assemblies all put together today, new seals, new bearings. Thought I would take a closer look inside the trumpet just to see how it looks in there. Ugh. Why didn't I look sooner? Here's what I saw. It's all metal, pulled my pto block off cover and there's a bunch of crap in the bottom of it it too. I'm pretty sure I drained all the oil out of the rear axle when I first had my troubles, can't remember for sure. Trans might be leaking into the rear axle also. I guess my next plan of attack is to pull the left trumpet off and pull the diff out. Any suggestions or ideas? Starting to get frustrated with this thing. Everything I look at is broken one way or another.

I was going to put in a couple pictures but I can't get them to load into the attachment manager, I also can't delete any that are in there already.

Well, got the left trumpet off and carrier out. Found the pinion support bearing came apart. I can grab the outer race and slide it in and out, just could even pull out out and remove all the rollers. 😠. Looks like I will be splitting this thing apart after all

I'm about to put this rear end back together and I was wondering if it is unusual not to have any shims under the left trumpet? There is an O ring there, but no shims. I didn't take the right side off and didn't have a need to. The carrier bearings and races look ok so I'm not replacing them. The book is a little confusing to me about the shim procedure
