My dealer has recommended I go for R4 tires for the new 3130 I've ordered instead of the standard Ag. tires I intended to order. He says I'll not notice mcuh difference in traction but R4's will tread much more gently. E/o on the standard price is $650. As this is my first tractor, I'm not sure if this is worth the money or not. I've a good deal of construction work and heavy ploughing to do with the tractor initially and if this wouldn't be compromised by R4's, they'd probably suit the maintenance work the tractor will have to do following. I'd hate to fit Ag. tires then find I can't navigate my lawn without damaging it. Comments and advise?

I have a 3130 with AG tires. I think they are great. Initially I was going with the R4 tires, but I found out the R4's are not compatable with the 72" MMM. (The R4's are too wide and rub the anti-scalp wheels and the back of the MMM). So because of this I got the AGs.

The AGs are more aggresive and will tear up some grass, but I have found that when I mow or move around in my yard, I make long sweeping turns and the AGs do little to no damage.

Now if your work will be in wet and muddy areas, the AGs are the best. The R4's will slick up real fast in wet and muddy conditions. If your work will be on hard surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, gravel or hardpack dirt, R4s are terrific. I hope this helps our in your decision making process.

Thanks for that information, Chris. We have around 33" of rain here, half of which falls between November - January. During that quarter of the year the ground is generally wet and soft. Field working would defnitely benefit from Ag. tires then but would be more likely to damage lawn areas. I don't have a lot of hardpacked stuff or concrete here. There's a gravel drive but mostly I'd be working in the field, the woodland or on grass. I've put out a call to a local veteran farmer who has taken me under his wing and asked for his opinion. I'm sure his local knowledge will be useful.
