Inexpensive Grinding Wheels and Disc Supplier

This was posted over at weldingweb. Some professional welders prefer name brand. They commented they do not last as long name brand. I bought a dozen of the zirconium flap disc grinding wheels. and they work well for me.

I have used most brands of cut off wheels, grinding wheels and similar items over the years. In my experience nothing beats Norton brand. Probably one of the most expensive but also the most durable. Their Gold Medalion line of cut off wheels outlast 6+ of the cheap ones.

I know exactly what you mean...I've been a Norton guy for years...Was over at Fastenal (my supplier of choice) one day and the salesman gave me a Metabo cutoff wheel (4 1/2" x .040) MAN, what a wheel...since then I've switched over to Metabo abrasives...

Flexovit "metal hogs" are really good hard wheels from my experience. they cut fast and last a long time.

Yup, Metabo makes good quality abrasive products to. What a coincidence, I get mine at Fastenal to.

When you say cheap ones, what are you referring other quality norton brand discs? I go through a lot of cutting discs and my local suppliers (Lowes and Rural King) carry Dewalt and Norton so I probably buy equal numbers of both. They are usually about $1.79 each or so for 4 1/2" discs. I've never noticed if the ones I am buying say Gold Medalion though ( don't think they do). I assume the ones I have been getting are the cheap ones, which last about like the Dewalt. How much do the Gold Medalian usually go for?

i find the "good" ones, that last a long time really don't do much work. i like a wheel that wears fast enough to keep it cutting good.

we've had good luck with the NAPA brand wheels, the cut good, but last well too. kinda a good ballance.

I have never had a problem with Nortons not doing much work. They are as fast if not faster than any other wheel I have used and in my opinion outlast all others.

Kernopelli - Not sure which ones you had but the ones I'm talking about look like this. The Medallion line is for 3 inch cut off wheels. I think their 4 1/2 inch premium line is Norton Plus.

Please add SAIT and Walter to your list of professional quality abrasives. The previous mentioned Norton and Flexovit are also included in what is preferred in the Welding Supply field. Norton has several tiers of wheels. Good Better Best .
