inexpensive tilling equip for L2800

I have an L2800 and would like to "till" about 1/2 acre this coming Spring for pumpkins, squash, and corn. It seems that a tiller will cost somewhere around $1300. Is there a cheaper way to do this? Would a single plow and chain harrow work? I think a disc harrow might be too expensive - not sure what they cost? Thanks.

Foy my L3400 I purchased a TSC middle buster for virgin soil and then purchased a 5' used disc harrow for $300. If your on a tight buget look for auctions or used equipment.

I second the middle buster. I picked one up at the tractor supply for $70. It does a great job for food plots, and I have even used it to loosen soil/shale before excavating it.

To have things grow you need soil to seed contact to get the seed to germinate. It will happen sooner or later as long as the seed doesn't rot out first.

Tilling will get you the type of seed you need with two passes normally unlike a disc which might take many passes to get a good seedbed but it will probably be compacted again do to the amount of trips over the field.

To rip is good, that will open up the soil so when the seed does germinate the roots can grow easily and you should have good strong plants. With plow sole at seven inches that would be what your plants would grow down too. Without, even corn can go down two feet so in dry years the stand will still be good.

Tilling and ripping is the cheapest in the long run although it won't help your pocket now.
