While I am sure that many of you have extensive knowledge on the subject of diesel engines and diesel fuel, I ran across the below information that I thought those of us who are still learning would appreciate.

The diesel engine is a type of internal combustion engine; more specifically, it is a compression ignition engine, in which the fuel is ignited by being suddenly exposed to the high temperature and pressure of a compressed gas; the intaken atmospheric air normally, rather than a separate source of ignition, such as a spark plug, as is the case in of the gasoline engine.

Diesel Fuel Oil Grades

Diesel fuel is graded and designated by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), while its specific gravity and high and low heat values are listed by the American Petroleum Institute (API). Each individual oil refiner and supplier attempts to produce diesel fuels that comply as closely as possible with ASTM and API specifications.
