I picked up a Ford model 1920 2WD w/o a loader. It is in pretty bad shape so I am going to spend some time fixing it up. One problem is all the turnbuckles are rusted and I broke one trying to loosen it up. I am hoping tractor supply has some. The engine starts smoothly and runs strong but there is a little smoke when you first start it. That may go away in time as it has been setting a long time. The hour gauge, fuel gauge and temp gauge all act like they are bad. There are holes in the fenders but fixable. Body isn't too bad and tires are decent. It came with the front weights, the seat is rusted in place so I am sitting too close to the steering wheel. I will have to install a sat belt as it is missing........that is it in general.

My main question is about the transmission. It looks like it has 3 forward ranges with a 4 speed tranny, with 1 reverse range. The indicator panel is on the dash is gone so I was wondering if someone here could give me the skinny on the shift pattern. It looks like low range is lower left, reverse is lower right, mid range is upper right and high is upper left.....but I was getting some speed out of mid range so I wasn't sure that was correct....also there does not seem to be a separate lever for shuttle, is that correct?

It is a 3 range/ 4 speed. The dash plate is mostly gone so I just wanted to be sure. The other thing I wanted to know was if the tranny was synchronized for the reverser, I know I have to clutch. I think the 1-4th is synchro too but the ranges are not....is this correct.

hmm..

my 1920 was a 4 range, 3 speed+R making 12f/4r I've seen 12/12 trannies.. but not anything that would be 12/3

is your range selector on the left lower side of the seat? and a column shifter at the steering wheel?

Yes, I have a 4 speed shifter on the left side by the seat and a 3 speed range selector w/R on the left side of the dash. So it would be a 12 forward and 4 reverse. What I was surprised at is how close together the the gear ratios are.

What it looks like is the they are spacing the gears based on the dash ranger, not the gear shifter.....which one is synchronized? The dash or the other?

what you are calling a range selector onthe dash is the gear shifter itself.

the 'range' selector is the 4 way on the left side...

OK, so the shifter is synchronize? I am going to drive it later today as it is finally drying out.....it was just too wet, we had some gully washers come thru here Friday.

I don't think anything is syncronized on this tranny. You may find you can slip gears a little with the dash shifter, but the range selector (on the fender) will be even less forgiving.

i agree.. I was never to do any shifting on the fly on my 12x4 :)
