Tractor
2001 John Deere 790 4x4, bar tires
My hunt club just bought a TO-35 tractor so we're looking for all the info we can get on it. I think we are going to get a service manual for the upkeep and maintanence. If anyone here can provide some feeback on it, I would appreciate it. What are the things we should look out for on this model tractor??? All I know is it's diesel, not sure how many gears it has.

FWJ, might you have an owners manual or a service manual for this tractor that you be willing to part with for a price? I guess I need to figure out what year model it is first???

We got the tractor for $1000, I have not seen it personally, but my club president has it at his house about 90 miles from where I live at. He says everything is good, other than it does smoke just a little bit, but I didn't think to ask what color it was. Also, he says the starter is acting up and we may be looking at $209 for a rebuilt unit. But first, he's going to pull it off and take it apart and see if it's a simple fix. Sometimes when you turn the key, all you hear is the solenoid click. He borrowed my trailer to go get it and it cranked up just fine to load it up onto trailer.

Anyway, the serial number on it is SDM201207. Can anyone date this tractor??

Also, I heard of a guy named Dean who has his own Massey website who's a bit of a guru on these old Massey's. Can anyone provide the link to his site??? Thanks!
Keith

GREAT old tractors! Yours is a 1959 model, very late year production.

I don't have any manuals, but they're available on EBAY, at AGCO/MF dealers, or a number of other possibilities. Get an owners manual, service manual and parts manual if possible.

BIG DEAN AUSTIN....He da MAN! AOL Hometown shut down, so his website is no longer FEMA (Ferguson enthusiasts of America) is supposedly taking up the cause and will host his website soon. It's worth every bit of the trouble it takes to find him. He knows more than any 10 people I know of when it comes to Fergies/ Massey Fergusons.

The TO35 will have an earlier version of the AD3-152 than the 135's and 150's I'm more familiar with, but I seem to recall their having the same size oil pan. Should take just over 6 qts w/filter change. Does your still have the original cannister type filter or has it been retro-fit with the later style spin on? If still original, make certain the spring and washers INSIDE the filter housing are still there and properly installed. Otherwise, circulating oil will bypass the filter.

If you would like to swap to the spin on type filter, simply get the filter mount for a 200 series MF w/ Perkins 3-cylinder (ie 230/235/240/245/250) That makes for a quick, simple oil change next time.

Bill, I haven't gotten to see the tractor yet! It's about 70 miles from my house, and it will probably be the weekend after this one coming before I do get to see it. Or, I may call him before then and ask if he can tell which style it has. From when I last talked to him, it sounded like it might have a spin on type filter. So, I can't answer your question at the moment, but I will print this out for reference.
Thanks again!
Keith

I think the Walt you are referring to is a member of the MasseyFerguson email group. You may be able to reach him by posting to it.
