Personally, I never feel warm with an infrared heater, forced air heat I do. The infrared never seems to heat up the other items in the shop like the forced air does, and it seemed like the workbenchs and other things just radiated cold. Just my opinion, I'm sure others like it just fine.

I have a forced air furnace (80K BTU'S) in my garage . Infrared heaters are 100% efficent. It depends on the BUT'S of the heater it /they will heat your shop

If you are talking about a unit that you plug into the standard wall socket, I'd buy a cheaper unit. A 1500W unit is a 1500W unit. $25 buys one at wallmart. Bigger cabinets and hype don't create anymore heat.

Look into a tube infrared heater that hangs from the celing. I have one in my 36 x 40 shop with a 14' wall. Cost about $700 but it is worth it.

Wife bought a $400 infrared heater last year. It makes a pretty table for a lamp but next to useless as a heater unless you are directly in front of it. Just my opinion, don't waste your money.

Check with local heating contractors, used house furnaces can be found cheap, $50 to $200 is common. These are nice because of the filter for dust control. Also new ones start out around $465, for a 50,000 btu gas furnace. go to Buy the Most Reliable Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioners from... Just be sure to mount unit on a stand, 18" is min from floor.

Yes! No matter how the 'green/efficiency' hype is digested, electric heaters do run at pretty much the same efficiency .... well, not too sure about the ones with halogen lights inside blackened tin boxes (light vs heat). Going in is indeed pretty much a matter of $/watt. OTOH, BTU/$ is subjective, ie: placement and local power rates. In-floor heat demonstrates the advantage of low source as it minimizes stratification without fans/circulators. In our garages with wood or gas, any fan to push some heat toward the floor is a must to minimize the hot head, cold feet hassle....
