I am gathering material to make a log splitter for my father in law that he can use with his ingersoll tractors hydraulics. It has a mounted valve on the back that operates the hydraulic tiller and other implements. My question is how would I use the valve that's there and also use a hand valve at the splitter to eliminate the need to go back and forth to operate the splitter. He has been told this tractor has a great hydraulic system so all you have to do is build the ram and use the tractors hydraulic. I hope this makes since, seems like I am talking in circles. The valve that's on the rear of the tractor has a block out that keeps you from moving the lever the other direction which would turn the tiller in the wrong direction but it can be removed.. The valve lever can be engaged and locked thus forcing fluid one direction then could I direct it to the in side of the splitters operating valve then the other line attach to the out or return side of the valve back to the tractor that way I could stand and use the valve control at the splitter? Sheesh I hope this makes since.

Btw its a 18 hp engine driving the hydraulic pump

Thanks

I am not familiar with that machine at all...But it sounds very similar to most other CUT's. After hooking up the splitter (must have a Open Center valve-most do) you will need to bungee the lever down so fluid flow constantly to the splitter.

I'm not super farmiliar with the Ingersolls either, but i would build the splitter with its control valve mounted to it. Having its valve on it will keep you (or him) from dangerously leaning over to operate the valve thats at the rear of the tractor. You will connect your splitters supply, and return line to the valve on the Ingersoll, and when in use, it will be locked open. This will provide the flow to your splitter valve. If you do a couple searches here, you will see lots of splitters members here have made or bought, and hooked up much like it will be with the Ingersoll.

Thanks guys that's what I was thinking. I did do some what of a search but I got side tracked for a while in all the home built splitter threads, WOW what a huge variety of splitters. I got to where I was just skimming over the text and checking out all the pictures(I do well with pictures) and didn't catch the part about locking the machines lever into place. makes sense to me.

I have a 20"x4" ram and my choice between a 6x6" by 1/4" walled square tube or I would say a 5" wide by 6" tall I Beam to use for the guide rail. Leaning towards the 6x6 what do you guys think.

How will you keep the wedge (or pusher plate, depending on which is on the ram) straight if you use a 6x6 square tube?
With an I beam you can hook the moving part over the flange quite easily which is why so many people use them

I had an Ingersoll 15 years ago. You have been told right , great hydraulic system, as good as a skidsteer. just bungy cord the lever to full open to use the rear connects as feed and return for the splitter. Make sure the splitter is hooked up before you bungy the valve handle back. Other wise the pump is pumping against a dead end. The pressure relief valve will go into relief but build up a lot of heat .
I built a hydraulic post hole unit and ran it off those connectors. Worked great and the auger could run in both directions.
In the end I needed a bigger tractor.

Good to know on the hydraulics, I will have to double check the size of the I Beam, I am hoping that I am not remembering wrong on the size thinking it is bigger then it actually is.

Will the size I have mentioned be strong enough to do what I want to do?

Basically if I use the 6x6 I would build a bracket that will wrap the tube and use a couple bars of soild steel for rollers on the underneath side to keep everything inline and secure when the ram is being used.

What would worry me about that setup is that when you get a piece of wood or bark jammed under/behind your wraparound frame it will bend it and cause it to bind. With an I beam that is pretty much a non-issue becuase the "vertical" part is only 3/4" tall.
