Jinma 284
Did oil change today on my Jinma 284 and also changed oil in the fuel injector body. Drained and refilled but it took about 8oz. My understanding it should only take 4oz. Took lower bolt of rear and also had vent/over fill open so I am sure it is not over filled. Is this a problem? Tractor started fine after changes and sounds good. Also oil coming which was drained from fuel injector did have a diesel smell should I be concerned? This is the first change for me (new used tractor) and I know the last owner did not care for unit correctly so not sure what they used as an oil.

So does mine once in a while when I change it. It means the fuel is leaking thru from the pump, the seals are going/gone, it's not as bad as you might thing as diesel does have some lubrication properties to it. If this is the first time it's been changed and you smelled the fuel I would not be concerned.
I just change mine between oil changes more for piece of mind than anything, worth it for 15 mins and a couple of CC's of 15-40....Mike

The only seals are in the lift pump, about $40 to replace.
Some cross contamination is to be expected because there are no seals in the barrel and plunger assemblies because they are a lapped fit.
There should be a 6mm bolt about halfway up the side of the injection pump, that is your oil level check point, not the vent cap on top.

Filled from vent on top to the level. Used system outlined on this website. I am sure that I have correct level in unit now. My pump has the side vent/level and I removed a bolt on the back which was recommended. I used compressor oil ISO 100 which seems to be recommended. I have heard of using 15-40 motor oil which is what I used in the engine. Does the oil type matter? Good to hear about the diesel smell I will check in a few hours and see if it is back.

Oil type does matter but it's not critical. Compressor oil can be used, but isn't necessary because there is no tendency for valves to be coking up, since there aren't any. Any good non-detergent ISO AW oil is good to use (220 is a good weight). The wearing parts inside the fuel injection pump that are lubricated with oil include all the governor components, the camshaft and plungers, the front camshaft bearing, and the lift pump eccentric follower. It is perfectly acceptable to use 15w-40 or 10w-30 engine oil if you want to reduce your oil inventory. Another good substitute is ISO AW 46 or 68 hydraulic oil, as it has an AGMA rating of 4.

Bob is right diesel smell is completely normal since some fuel leaks past the plungers into the pump body.
Just change the oil once in a while, reccomend you do it whenever you change the engine oil.
FYI once these pumps get extremely worn (happens rarely, inline fuel injection pumps often outlast the engine, seen an engine that was overhauled twice and still had the original pump on it) they will leak so much fuel into the body and won't be able to make enough pressure to pop the injectors.
