I bought mine at TSC. It is a Speeco. I augered probably close to 200 9" holes with it and it is still in good shape. I file the cutters on the bottom of the flight and it keeps on diggin!!! Buy a good supply of shear pins though..
I have a Leinbach 7200 W/9" auger that works great. On this model, the gearbox separates from the boom assembly with one pin. This allows me to use the boom assembly as a utility boom and allows me to easily put it on and off the 3PH by myself in 3 easy steps without a special storage rack or hanging the PHD from a cable or breaking my back in the process.
1. Put boom arch on lift arms and attach boom end to toplink attach point.
2. Back tractor so boom end is in corner of barn where gearbox/auger are
stood for storage. Lean gearbox away from wall where it stands and line
up pin and hole on end of boom to insert pin and lockpin.
3. Attach driveshaft to PTO and go start "makin hole".
I have probably punched about 100 9" holes with mine over the past year and a half in setting a few posts and boring around old stumps to loosen them for removal. No issues so far
I have a Landpride myself and I can't say enough good things about it. It digs great in the rocky New England soil. They are pricy but what isn't with Landpride. I feel it was worth every penny
I went with a Worksaver and like the others it comes apart with a single pin. Very sturdy and well built like all the better knows PHDs. I have a few hundred holes with it and its a nice unit. No damage and holding up very well. Buy lots of shear pins and an extra set of digging teeth for your auger. Overall I would say I'm extremely happy with it.
I dont think you can go wrong on the PHD as long as you choose a well known brand.
I haven’t gone through any shear pins at all. It has certainly staled out the tractor though. I dig at low RPMs with a PHD though. If I get into a rock or a large root I go at it with bars and clamshell
