I have a Yanmar 2310 that will not lift some round bales I recently purchased. I have a tumblebug (haybuggy)that works off of a brakecontroller (when hooked up to pickup). I want to put bales out with my tractor.

Could someone walk me through installing a brake controller to my tractor?

Thanks

I don't think brake controller is exactly a household name among Yanmar owners. What is it?

I should have been more specific. The "trailer brake controller" such as you would have in you vehical that controls the trailer brakes. The "tumblebug" uses this to lock its brakes and flip the bale of hay on to it.

Hope this helps. Any advice?

Thanks

I doubt that anyone has ever installed/needed one of those on a 3-5mph tractor.

You shouldn't actually need a true brake controller. Just wire up a switch to provide 12V to the brakes on the tumblebug when engaged.

rancher - what type of wiring connector does it have?

"flip of a switch" Bale Mover

See this link... he want to use a tractor instead of a truck. Sorry I can help with the wiring... as I just hooked up a brake controller but bought one that was pretty easy to tie into (plug in model) to my truck.

normdee2001. I am putting out hay on my place. I would rather use the tractor than a $30,000 truck. Plus the tractor is alot more manuverable through gates and cedars.

rus_geek the tumble bug is wired with a 6 point plug. I was not aware I could use a switch. That would be a huge savings to buying a brake controller. Do I purchase a 12 v switch, wire to battery and get a female 6 point?
What are your thoughts? Thanks for the advice.

About three years ago I completely overhauled the tractor engine. I could not have done without the help of the members on here.

There is a good schematic of the 6-pin here: Trailer Wiring Diagrams

There is a second type of 6-pin wiring that inverts the S and center pins, just to confuse matters, so testing may be required :)

Try sending 12V to the blue/S pin (don't forget to connect the ground, too) and that should actuate the brakes on the tumblebug.

I think a simple switch will lock the brakes in an instant, while the expensive brake controller can be more gradual.

Is 'instant' ok in this application, or is it going to break something?

Maybe some electronics guru can devise an inexpensive gradual-engage buffer to use with the switch.

California - Good train of thought, but in this application, the idea isn't to "brake" the trailer, but actually to lock up the brakes (while not moving) in order to get it to trip over and fold up against the bale. Take a look at some of the links further up, and you should have a pretty clear idea of what it's trying to accomplish.

But yes, if this were actually being used as "brakes" in the traditional sense, you would want to gradually apply the brakes, as well as only applying them up to a certain point, rather than a full straight-12v lock-on.
