I'm getting tired of the mess that seems to accumulate around the metal plate that is bolted onto the top of this tank. I think I'll clean it off good and remove the plate to install a gasket...but my question is what would be the best material gasket to install here? Is there a particular auto parts store gasket that would have a good fit?

On my 1845, I did it early on with a tube of Form-A-Gasket. Seemed to work.

I worked on this problem by making a gasket and also using the Blue Gasket material to no avail. What did work is that I cleaned out the hole in the cap and added one additional hole for venting. Now I get a little coming out of the extra vent hole in cap but that is all. The gasket material (blue) around the opening and around the bolt holes along with the extra vent did the trick.

I too found that oozing around the cover plate to be an annoyance.

I used Loctite "Flange Sealant #510" and it has eliminated all of the ooze. It's specifically formulated to fill in gaps in mating faces/flanges, and it's suitable for up to 400 degrees F. Loctite makes other flange sealants and gasket makers, but this one has the proper temp rating and gap range.

I found best availability and fair prices for all our Loctite needs at Industrial Supplies & Equipment: Loctite Flange Sealant 510 Gasket Eliminator High Temperature - 50 ml Tube - Loctite Products - All Safety Supplies / Industrial Division - Detail The 510 comes in various sizes. You'll probably need the 50 cc tube to do the hydraulic cover.

In doing a little research on this product I have found a similar product "Hernon Gasket Replacer 907". According to their cross reference chart this macthes the Loctitie 510 product and is considerably cheaper....anybody have any experience with this product?

I have had this problem for over a year and reported this to the PT forum. A number of suggestions which I tried to no avail. I then took a look at the cap and found the breather hole to be plugged ahich I cleaned and added another on one the other side. Used the Blue gasket sealer all round the opening and around the bolt holes and this has worked. Not long ago the problem came back when mowing on a hot day. I checked the cap and found both holes plugged. Cleaned out and so far is working well.

I fabricated a cork gasket which works well. Using the silicon form a gasket products makes a mess down the road if you want to remove the access cover. After removal you will have to scrape and clean the old material from the metal surfaces and stand the chance of contaminating the oil with the silicon. I have taken the cover off several times and re-used the cork gasket.

Why have you found it necessary to remove the cover?

I have not heard of the Hernon product. Cheaper is better, but only if it works. Worst case potential would be a failure of the Hernon gasket stuff, and then having to re-do with the Loctite, along with the double effort. No biggie, really. For me, I subscribe to my grandad's philosophy: "Buy right, cry once."

Removed the first time to inspect the gasket that PT should have installed to prevent the oil mess on the top of the tank. Removed it again to install the new cork gasket. Removed again to get an idea how to install a dry well for my tank temp gauge. Removed again to drill and tap for the dry well. Will be changing tank oil soon and will remove to clean the tank. I am working on an idea for an inexpensive aux. 3 micron filter with pump. If it works out okay will most likely remove it again to install quick connect fittings for when I want to filter the tank oil. If you remove the tank cover and take a good look at the oil it tells a different story from what you see on the dip stick.
