I just bought a PTO driveline slip clutch for my Bush Hog shredder. I am tired of replacing shear bolts. It came without any instructions but I have found most of what I need here on TBN.

The distance between the securing bolts on the input and the output is 5" +-. It seems logical to me that that distance is the correct amount to shorten the driveline that now fits properly.

Or __ am I missing something? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If it were me before the drive shaft was cut I would mount the slip clutch on the gearbox, raise the shredder so that the slip clutch is the same height as the PTO stub and take your measurement at that point. That way your drive shaft won't be bottoming out when you lift the shredder and it can't do any damage to the tractor as a result. Understand?

I say up front that I haven't seen all gearbox applications, but the ones I have seen with a shear bolt have a smooth, round input shaft to the gearbox. The slip clutch models have a splined input shaft. Do some slip clutch assemblys have a smooth bore on the gearbox side? I was considering the same thing, but didn't persue the idea.

Yep, the slip clutches can be had for both splined and smooth. Agri supply sells them and shows pictures. I can't imagine not having a slip clutch on the PTO shaft.

Try your local Tractor Supply Co. for that particular slip clutch, or contact KingKutter as that's the clutch that's on my tiller.

The slip clutch I got has the 1-3/8" smooth shaft input and output.

Just have to shorten the driveline the apropriate amount. The driveline now has sufficient free space so I did not think it necessary to go through the usual method to keep from getting the shaft too long.

Thanks to all for the information. I come here every day because I always learn something.

I suppose the connections use a grade 5 or grade 8 bolt?

The bolts that came with the clutch I bought are grade 8 which I would have used had they not been provided.
