While I've owned the place for 3-4 yrs, we just moved in late July. The house, from newspaper I've found glued to the interior of the roof sheathing is 1888-90 (Grover Cleveland and "Glasgow, The Clyde Regatta, Won by the Thistle") Google is wonderful. Anyway, not stick one of insulation in the walls, but there are 3- .75" layers of sheathing. Blew the insulators away trying to drill and fill. Some R13 batts in the attic, which I had covered with R-30. The walls I just had the drill and fill with blown-in fiberglass done this week. 50% of the exterior of the place is T-111 exterior so I am going to have to re-side those right away. Windows are single glazed AL. Yikes! I'll put on new windows as I reside. I am pretty sure that once it rains, there is no way to keep the T111 from exploding due to moisture absorption. This place is completely the old pine heavy wall panelling on the interior walls. I guess there is a reason the place is locally known as the "cabin in the sky". Oddly framed with a lot of horiz blocking to support the interior panelling. This place is a modified gambrel. There are some places on the second floor we could not reach to insulate, for now that is. Temps are in the 30-40's nights so far in the foothills. Definitely warmer inside since the insulation added. I'm heating the place with mini-splits, Rinnai Energysavers and just had a Vermont Casting Encore delivered today. Looking at generators, but having the service re-done and going to do without the gen for this winter. We'll see how that goes. If it is bad, it will make it easier to get my "no longer blushing bride" to go for the generator
How do you like hardi board siding? I'd prefer cedar, but for fire and all, I hear the the hardi-plank is the way to go. What do you all think?
