I'm headed to pick up my new tractor this Tuesday. So I give my insurance agent a call and make sure things are cool for theft, fire etc at home, no problem. I mention I will be hauling it myself home and remit "I assume my auto covers the tractor while I'm on the road" Long story short, "no". I can't seem to find any rider to cover my transport (about 60 miles) home. What does the average homeowner do when he transports it for service etc. I bought from a dealer that is not able to deliver into my state. What is a guy to do? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

What's the chances of the worst case happening with you at fault during one 60-mile trip?

Myself, I would just drive as carefully and safely as possible, and expect to get home without incident...

If not comfortable with that, I suppose the only other option would be to pay someone who has insurance that would cover the load to do it, or get something like an Inland Marine insurance policy that I believe would cover the tractor during transport...

Insure the tractor itself. Either the policy thedealer offers or inland marine. BTW Only my TN is insured. The 2120 and excavator are self insured by me.

My auto policy covers anything I tow. Maybe liability but not replacement of the tractor.

I'll call Inland Marine in the morning and some local trucking/transport services and get a price. I get the feeling delivery will be in the $250 price range, curious about the marine thing.

It's just frustrating after all the research and time spent with my TBN friends putting this together, that I have this risk hanging out there. Yes, they will give me liability but no coverage for the tractor itself. Makes me wonder about the ATV's I used to haul? What are the chances of a bad result? Small I agree, but my entire livelyhood is based on the appearance of senior MURPHY, so I am reminded every day I go to work. That aside, I'm stoked.

I have most of my insurance with the local Farm Bureau folks. When I bought the first tractor I bought a separate policy through Farm Bureau for it, and when I traded simply transferred the insurance. It's strictly insurance on the equipment, supposedly against all hazards, with no liability included. I think it's about $85 per year.

Hi

I road my tractor all the time. My insurance agent told me the exact same story when I inquired about travelling on the public roads.
So now, I do exactly what my insurance agent told me to do. Drive in the daylight, take as many backroads as possible, have a slow moving sign and all your lights on, use the shoulder of the road whenever possible, drive with extreme caution and "pray" you don't hit anything.
Good luck

Richard

You may want to get an Inland Marine policy. While in tow your liability extends out but unless you have the unit covered you have no physical coverage. If you own farm ground or rural property you may want to include farm liability and include your tractor as scheduled farm personal equipment. Inland Marine coverage is fairly inexpensive.

Ask your agent about an Inland Marine policy. It is not a company but a type of coverage. There are several types depending on your needs. It will cover your tractor on or off your property and covers much more than a regular home owners policy will. If you agent does not know about this type of policy then get another agent.

Inland Marine policies have been discussed many times here on TBN. Do a search, sit back, and relax while reading.

Drive it home during offhours to eliminate the traffic as much as possible and you'll be fine. If you really want to be careful have someone drive behind you on the way home like your wife or a buddy.
