Glad to hear you found the problem. If you have the head milled (from over heating)you're valve clearances will be even tighter. You may have to look into thicker head gaskets or shorter push rods. Are the valves adjuastable?
BTW you can get compression guages that have a tapered rubber end (one size fits all).
Or in a pinch you can just use compressed air to blow into the cylinders one at a time on TDC of the compression stroke (both valves closed) and if there is much of a leak at all you'll hear it coming out of the intake, exhaust, crankcase or head gasket in your case. This will help narrow down the problem pretty quickly. The good cylinders will spin the motor even if you're holding the crank with a breaker bar. lol
