Not a new concept, just a different way of doing it. At one time before high horsepower units were available it was common place to join two tractors in tandem to get the job done. Most people just were not as creative as the guy with the 8n's

By putting 2 8N's together, do you get a 16N or a 88NN??

How does the clutch work, wonder it has them linked someway where you are working both at same time and then how do you get both adjusted to mate. How about engine speed and cranking them? Wonder if he put better brakes on his combo than they came with? Is amazing.

People who do this sort of thing never ask "Why?", they only ask "Why not?"

Here would be my guess. If he welded the two inside axles to each other, then he'd have the two differentials working together. That way both engines drive both wheels, and he doesn't have to precisely synchronize the two engine speeds to keep it going straight. I'm betting that the throttles, clutches, etc. are all synchronized to each other. It would be like the throttles on a two cylinder motorcycle engine with dual carbs. The starters and chokes may or may not be synchronized. It may be easier to start each engine separately.

As to the "Why?" question; I see it a lot like going to the moon. The end result in and of itself may not have much benefit to the world. The real value lies in what was learned in the process.

I would bet my own money the differentials are welded solid and the inside axles are removed. If you joined the inside axles together all that would happen is the wheels would remain stationary and the inside axles would spin at twice the normal speed, just like a regular diff does when one wheel loses traction completely.

Oh, yeah. That's right. I didn't think that through completely. What if he only welded one differential?

I am new to the site. I am a heavy equipment mechanic who was raised in a small farming community. My dad and I have rebuilt several old tractors including a Farmall M. I just bought an Ajax motor and am very intrested in making my own tandem tractor. I was thinking before I do it on a real tractor I will make a tandem lawn mower. Any ideas?
