It is interesting reading but really doesn't say a whole lot. Mostly measurements of the filters. I would imagine that any of them would do an adequate job on your tractor. Change the oil at a reasonable time frame and you will never have a problem. Sometimes I think we worry too much about small things.

I find it interesting about the leak back of some filters.

What I found interesting was the leakdown on the Fram filters allowing your vehicle to have valve clatter in the mornings. I always used Purolater filters with no valve clatter on my Ranger and last oil change put on a Fram and sometime after I noticed valve clatter for the first time when starting my truck in the morning. I never linked it to the filter till I read this post. I went out and bought a Purolater filter today and will install it as soon as I get a chance and see if the am valve clatter ceases.

I have a Ranger also and have always used Fram filters. Now I know why I have that initial valve clatter. Guess I am changing as well.

Engine Oil Filter Study

This guy needs to get a life:rolleyes: . I would need someone to explain to me how the brand of oil filter has anything to do with hydraulic lifters collapsing.

Some filters have a "leak back" valve, so the filter doesn't empty out when the engine shuts down, I think it has mostly to do with the filter's orientation. If it's upside down for example, you really need the valve, so that the filter doesn't empty out over night. Waiting for the filter to fill up with oil is what's causing the clatter, only what I'd bet you're hearing is rod noise rather than valve clatter - which is even worse!

Most VW cars (at least they used too) require a filter with this valve for just this reason......

Whatever is happening, you can bet the filter ain't causing the lifters to collapse, (valve clatter). They either retain oil over a given period of time or they don't.

Dave , I would rather have oil in my filter at start up than not. These test are done (& there are other test ) to show folkes that don't what filters do, & that some filters do alot better job than others. Take the fram with a plastic check valve . There are folkes out there that think fram ( because very good advertising campaign) is the best out there.I add oil to my filters (when ever possible ) when I change oil & filter , to keep from having a dry filter start up.
