Something broke inside the outside wheel housing of the mfwd axle. A gear tooth or bearing as it only locks occasionally. Just wondering what other people found when this happened to them if they did their own work.

Your post is pretty vague, but I'd stop driving that thing asap.

Your going to have to tear it apart to see what the problem is and what failed

The only thing I can think of is a gear tooth broke loose either at the top of the housing or the bottom gear set. As the gears are rotating, this piece may or may not become lodged in a tooth spline thus the intermittent occurrence. It does this whether in 4wd or 2wd so I do not believe it is a center differential problem. No leaking anywhere. I agree about not using it till I find out as I do not want to wreck anything more than I already have.

Bad news, bad news. This is an mf agco trait. Mine done it twice. Dealer rebuild at about 4000 dollars. Then a year later it shelled right where the shaft feeds the front axle. Mf has a very weak front axle and agco finally admitted it to me. If you do the work youself, might be 1500-1800 dollars in parts. Their front end as well as their tractor is a joke. Not much positive to say about mf and agco.

Ps. As the front axle forms an "L" / 90 degree angle, I undersrand that there is some bearings and a worm gear. This is probably where you have trouble. Yes, taking it out of 4 wheel drive won't solve the problem. The "engineers " desigNed that it turns all the time 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive so you have to fix it. You can't just limp it along. (Imagine that).

oof. Tough luck with your machine. Mine looks as if it has a beveled gear set at the point of your description. I'd be happy to just get the broken piece out as it turns fine otherwise.

Found the culprit. This gear tooth broke off and was getting intermittently caught. Slightly chipped one tooth on the final drive as well. Ordered both gears yesterday. They were in stock so I'll get them Friday. Seeing if this will be a warranty item as tractor has 6 months left on its five year power train warranty otherwise it'll cost me about $350 for the two gears. Whatever. It's better than the two or three week wait for the service backlog if I brought the entire tractor to the dealership.

Did you order new seals too along with hydro fluid? Seals may get damaged during removal. You will need to flush the housing well.

Good luck

I’d definitely change the fluid. I usually don’t change a non leaking seal. I probably would change those though.

A couple seals are done with rtv type and the two that aren't I do not need to disassemble. Mahindra stuff must nave gold flake in it at $81 per tube. Only other seal is a rubber o-ring that is still in good shape. Fluid change is a must. What one has to look out for in a job like this are the shims. They tend to stick together and come out of alignment when putting it all back together and get crushed. Free play is measured in thousandths so these shims are a critical piece. This is really a very simple job otherwise. (boy, I shouldn't have said that. I may have haunted myself).

$350 and some wrenching sounds like a good deal to me. To bad it happened but being able to work on it yourself makes it a lot easier to take money and time wise.
