484 International Farmall H
Going to look at a International 484 in the morning. A neighbor passed on a while back and the widow is selling the tractor. Never owned an International before but looked at a few while trying to find another 40-50 hp tractor. I need something a little bigger that will handle a roll of hay and has remote hydraulics for a mower. After looking at some craigslist listings that the owner said "just what you are looking for" only to find it needs new tires and is started with a screwdriver I may have stumbled onto a worthy machine. Anything to look for as far as any problems these tractors may have?

Gas or diesel? Tires won't be cheap, maybe as much as $2K? Or maybe I don't understand your post?..... I had a 300 Utility, it was a great tractor, but getting parts for old tractors can be hard. Good luck.

It is a diesel and owner says tires are good, we'll see.

I bought it. Tires were nearly new, runs as smooth as can be steering tight all controls seem normal. Had a clutch installed a couple years ago and the mechanic who done it is my neighbor so I am confident it is a good machine.

How is your experience with the HI 484. I bought one last week and the electricity issues with the positive pole-earthed-disturbs me when connecting gauges, lights and meters. Have you a detailed electrical diagram of 484?

I have had a 584 for 20 years,,, mine is a negative ground system.

Is it possible someone improperly installed a battery at some time in the tractor's life?

Thanks for your kind response. The owners manuals says clearly that it is positive battery earthed. It warns from numerous dangers and shorts. Most IH models are negative battery earthed. At this point in my life I will not further endanger the tractor's wire harness (which is quite torn in pieces). Even the local tractor's electrician here said he know nothing about - although he mentioned old trucks - 50 years old - with positive battery earth. Looking for more ideas and possibly wire diagrams.
