International B250 1957 ish
Hi I have just joined this forum and am looking for some help starting my newly acquired tractor
Its an International B250 Diesel around 1957?

The motor turns over, plenty of oil, water, and fuel, battery charged.

I have fuel passing right through to the tank when i pump primer

The switch for glow plug does not work so i run a lead from the battery straight to the first glow plug

After about 15 seconds i sprayed some "Start ya Bastard" into the air intake, then turned it over,
I am getting some smoke from exhaust but not starting.

I am not too bad with petrol motors on old tractors etc. but i have no experience with Diesel

Any clues?

Don't use starting fluid with a diesel. Make sure your air path is clear from the intake to the manifold paying attention to the air cleaner itself. Bleed any air out of the lines. Air in the lines can prevent fuel from getting to the cylinders. Fix or replace the glow plug switch. Most should receive 10.5 volts not twelve. Are you sure the glow plugs aren't burned out?

Loosen ALL the lines AT THE INJECTORS.. now while cranking the engine, watch the loosened lines.. is there fuel squirting out.??
If no, u have pump problems.. it’ll never start if the fuel isn’t making it to the injectors..
Be VERY CAREFUL running glow plugs and spraying starting fluid.. I think u can figure out why..

Another thread that may help.

Our B250 is a warm weather tractor only. The slighest chill in the air, forget it. FiL has owned since new. Glow plugs haven't worked in decades, always needs a shot of starter fluid to get it going. Most of its value is scrap metal. These tractors were workhorses in their day, hour meter has probably rolled over several times or doesn't work. Never "bump" the starter or lug the engine to the point where it can stall, as it can start rotating the opposite direction and run away on you.

If u get the gp’s working, u could start it in snow.. given the compression hasn’t been compromised by ether..
Run a simple push-button for the gp’s..hot wire to the button and then to the gp rail..& check the gp’s themselves..
