Not a very clear topic title I know.

I have rural internet from a Verizon Cell tower near through a cradlepoint router/modem from my job.
It is unlimited but I don't want to abuse it and I believe that it gets throttled down at the tower if too much bandwidth is used by one ip addressed user.

So the question. If I installed one of those systems that you can monitor from your phone. I.e. Security cameras, home monitoring, etc., does this eat into your "minutes" as a constant drain? Or just when you log in to access from afar?

Thanks
Lenny

The cloud based security systems would burn through lots of data, but if you go with a hard drive based system without online backup then it would only use measurable data when you're logged in remotely.

You shouldn't need to get any usage apps if you only want basic tracking. Nearly all major telecoms will have a bandwidth page you can just check, and it won't use much data since they do all the logging for you. I for example just have the web page bookmarked on my phone and i can just load it up and see whenever i want for kb's worth of data use.

I've got the same setup. Verizon will throttle back a modem based connection regardless after 10Gbs. In order to have full speed with all your data you'll need a none unlimited plan. I VPN into work on a regular basis so that's the way I had to go. To your question yes cloud based will use a lot of data. If you want to have access via phone then you can find a disk based system and find a way to access your system via IP address and port. IP address would be your static public address of the router and with the port you can set the router to access your video DVR.

Greatly depends on the camera system - data usage counts as minutes. I had one that would only "look" if I accessed it OR it detected motion. It was set inside so very little data usage. But if it had been looking outside motion would have set it off, however the sensitivity was adjustable.

Right now I'm running an "At Home" system and that sends data all the time at the default setting.
