I recently got hit with a popup that said something like "if both your CD drives are open, then you need to protect your computer ... ", it opened both of my CD drives, and then it took me to "default-home-page.com" and changed the default home page of my browser to that address!

How dangerous is this thing? I have a popup stopper running (panicware), but it didn't stop it. After it came up the second time, I went to my windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file and blocked it by redirecting that address to 127.0.0.1, so it has stopped doing it, but is there already some damage done?

Check to see if you have some new toolbar installed on your system. What you have is a parasite and not a virus. If you do, you just have to Uninstall it. It might be called something like MySearch Bar.

Here is a good source of information on parasites: and.doxdesk.com

What you also got was not a popup, that is why your pop-up blocker didn't catch it. I would bet that this thing changed your default Home Page to it's own site.
