Hello:
Have modest lawn tractor needs that I have fulfilled over the last 20 years with used John Deere equipment. Started with an STX-38; then an LT 150 4 years ago to most recent find, an LT-180 with 110 hours. All have been great machines and I have had to do various service and maintenance things to keep them going well.
Both the STX and the LT-150 were previously used for lawn service before I got them, but had been pretty well maintained. I never had any trouble with the transmissions and I guess that both of them had upwards of 300-400 hours when I got rid of them.
I have read with interest the issues with the Tuff Torq K46 transmissions and the need to change fluid to keep them going. I plan to change the trans. oil to synthetic after mowing season and possibly the large filter as well. I usually put about 25-30 hours per year cutting grass. When I last cut the grass, after 1 hour the transmission external temp (measured by a heat gun) was 126 degrees Max. The temp on the base of the engine was about 177.
I do appreciate the lengthy and well written description along with pictures that was recently on this forum on how to remove and repair a K46. That, along with the other interesting topics on this forum prompted me to join.
Now that I am a member, I will probably just lurk until I find a topic that I feel that I can contribute something meaningful to the discussion. Thank you in advance for providing a place for the gathering of such useful information.
