2003 Mahindra 5500
Hey guys, new member here. Just bought myself a 2003 Mahindra 5500 4WD earlier this week. It seems to be in great shape. I do have one question though. I have the two letters on the left side for the pto. One that actually turns it on and the other being the clutch to be able to turn it on. When I flip the IPTO clutch lever forward, the pto lever grinds just a bit when flipping it forward to the "on" position and then starts to turn before releasing the IPTO clutch.

I've never used a tractor with the separate clutch like this. Based on what I know about clutches, I believe would think the pto shouldn't start spinning until flipping the IPTO clutch lever backwards I don't know if the previous owner used the pto much. I bought from a dealership about 4 hours away. There is a Mahindra dealer about 10 miles from me and I have a good friend that is a JD mechanic.

sound like the clutch needs adjusting. is not being released completely when depressed causing it to grind and start turning

I also forgot to mention that I put my 5ft finish mower on it today. At the lowest rpm I can run, it busted two shear pins as soon as the PTO engaged.

Also, on a side note, does anyone know where I can get my hands on a service manual or operators manual for the 5500? I mainly need the service, but the operators would be a "nice to have".

You should be able to go to Mahindrausa.com, make an account and download everything you need about your tractor.

I've got a '02/'03 6000 4wd....not sure but, have you checked to see if you have the 540/1000 rpm PTO? My 6000 has both...there's a lever above the PTO shaft that changes it over from 540 to 1000 rpm..may be the reason you are busting shear pins...BobG in VA

Yes, it's set to 540. I think the reason they're busting is because the clutch on the PTO isn't really working so when I flip it to on, it's catching right into gear. I could be wrong though.

I leave the throttle at idle, and just "bump" the lever a couple of times to get the unit turning (7 ft heavy duty brush hog..but its got a slip clutch on it so not shear pin) before I pull it all the way back...you may want to try that...it will get the hog turning slowly so you won't "bang" it too hard. So to give an update on this. I split the 5500 4WD over the weekend. When we pulled the clutch pack off, it looked like the PTO disc had barely ever been used (500 hours on machine). It still has the older discontinued style round disc as opposed the more triangular style. Is there any benefit to swapping it over? I'm sure it goes beyond just changing the disc out. From what we can tell, it looks like the fingers for the PTO just need to be adjusted out a bit and the throwout needs to be adjusted to travel a little further forward.

Oh yeah, and I need a new pilot bearing. If that's the only part I need to replace, i'm pretty ecstatic. One other question, my buddy that works on green tractors said they always replace the flywheel bolts when they pull the flywheel off. Is there a good source for getting new bolts or just roll with the ones that are already on there after the bearing is replaced?
