Is 2 cyld. G.M. diesel any good ?

440 J.D. dozer w/ a GM diesel are they any good ? Do they have sufficient power to do hard work
or are they mainly for the simpler tasks around the farm ?

About par for any other 53+ year old machine. What do you expect from a machine used and abused for 1/2 a century? They were 34HP on a good day so yes they were decent sized machine in their day but a toy today.
So what are you planning on doing with the 440ID ?
The 2-53 was built with 17 to 1 compression "S" pistons and many operators seemed to have no clue about cold weather starting.Instead of installing and using a block heater they would build fires underneath or hammer the engine with ether.
"N" series updates are used in 53 series rebuilds today. will start at freezing temps after 3-4 turns.

I was considering buying it for "Resale" I don't know anything about the GM 253 engine and how it would
perform in a 440 J.D. The machine is for sale locally at a cheap price so I decided to find out more about
it before i purchased.
I don't know if the machine would be a turn off to potential buyers because of this engine, or perhaps
a plus. As i stated i don't have a clue, that's why it's listed in hope of someone given their opinion or
maybe have owned and operated one, which would be great.

Undercarrage and tracks are 90% of a crawler. The steering clutches/steering brakes another 5%. Everything else is the last 5%.
The 440 was a important step into today's Deere industrial market.
If you properly "restore" the 440 you will be out many thousands of dollars when trying to re-sell. You may do ok on re-sale if a battery and a paint job is the overhaul.
Properly re-built the 440 will outlast you and your children.
You will need a service and parts manual. There were several running upgrades and updates during production.
Many two stroke diesels went to the rebuild shop because of something as simple as the operator did not read the service and used the wrong lube oil. With a bit of proper regular maintenance the 2-53 was near indestructible.

I'm going to try it out this weekend, no fear of it being sold before than, as it belongs to a friends
family member.
The machine is sitting inside a barn, and has been for several years. Will let you know how it turns out.
