Tractor
Deere 3038E
I have a Deere 3038 E with 37 HP, 3 cylinder, 91 CID weighing in at 2,200 lbs. I need more digging and bucket carrying power, plus stability on hilly, rough ground. Planning on either the 4044R or 4052R, with axle spacers. The tractor weighs 3,700 lbs and is longer, taller and wider. The 4044 has only 7 hp more than the 3038 (plus has an extra cylinder and more CID) - will that be significant, or do I need to spend the extra $3,000 to get the 4052R with an additional 8 Hp (which is 14 Hp more than the 3038E). Either unit has enough PTO power. Using the H180 loader.

If a 6 HP increase wasn't noticeable, nobody would buy them.
It sounds like you need a bigger tractor so the 40XX with the weight benefit and increase HP would help out quite a bit, but that is subjective.
To get the tractor with the turbo for more horsepower with the same sized frame and body, would be alright if you want to spend the money, but my understanding is more horsepower on the same frame is generally needed for larger ground engaging equipment like tillers and plows even big mowers.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think you would dig much more with a 50 HP 4000# tractor with a turbo than a 4000# tractor without a turbo and a few less horsepower.

I bought a 3720 with 45 HP with a turbo and did a lot of digging and bucket work but probably could have done the same amount of work with a 3320 without the turbo and quite a bit cheaper up front.

If it was me I would go bigger. Not many people with they went smaller and less HP. I am assuming you found that out with the 3038E.

Six HP you would notice if the tractor weighed substantially more. Sounds like you want and need more than a 6 HP bump so don't go with too little a second time. Bump it, say 20 HP and lots more weight. Be happy.

Yup, the additional Hp AND the additional torque will be noticeable. Of course, the added weight will help to translate that power to the ground and on the end of the PTO as well!

Going up another rung on the Hp ladder is something you'll have to weigh depending on the work you want/need to accomplish with the tractor.

Good luck with whatever tractor you decide to buy.

I love these discussions about Hp! As I get older and 'feebler' (god I hate admitting it), it is fun to talk about power. A saner mind will tell you to evaluate your task/job and select appropriate sized machine. Bigger is almost always better except when dealing with tight spaces, delicate work, etc. I am assuming you have a lot of flat terrain (Iowa?) to deal with... so if that is the case, man up... I mean go for the Hp and a heavier machine. :D. Me? I am 'stuck' with the little BX on my modest 1.5 acre.
