Is a JD X475 Mower 62\" Deck big enoughfor 6.5acres

Is a John Deere Mower with a 62" deck big enough to mow 6.5 acres?

I found that it was the largest mower john deere offered, and just wanted you guys opinion. The land is smooth, with no rough areas, like a golf course. The mower will be used ONLY to mow. I don't have any other needs. Any help appreciated.

I guess that depends on how much you like mowing. You can figure out how long it will take you by multiplying it out, but if you are only going to mow with it, I think the collective wisdom of TBN will say that a ZTR type mower will be a lot faster.

A ZTR? But just looking at a JD ZTR they come with 40 odd - 50 odd " size decks and less hp. I have one hill beside the main road that is kinda steep and those ZTR's don't look like they got any weight to 'em on the front, where as the X475 mower does at least have the engine on the front.

Do you think the X475 is powered enough to mow something like 6.5 acres? It has low to mid-20's HP.

There's no question it has the "Power" to mow 6.5 acres. If it can mow 1 acre, it will mow 20. The question is how fast will it mow 6.5 acres. Think of that 6.5 acres layed out as a strip 58 inches wide. How long is that? Figure a X475 would mow comfortably at, say, 6 mph (just as a wild guess). How long will it take you to mow?

I really don't think power is an issue, except that a small machine will bog down if you go too fast. The X475 is not a small machine, and I suspect that if your lawn is that smooth and nice you must mow often rather than mowing three inches off each time you get around to mowing.

Yea, When I first bought it last year I'd let it grow up for hay. But this year and following years have decided to mow it all down. Also did ALOT of work to it to get it to this point.

I know we was mowing with a 60" LX5 cutter and tractor, so as far as I can figure out, I'm gaining 2" with this 62" deck on the X475. The mower just looks smaller, but the cut is bigger.

The mower will certainly do it. Like already said it is a lot of mowing. Maybe consider an off set tag along mower. My fabricator just built one (you can also buy them) for a guy that mows an airstrip. It cut their mowing time down considerably. Great Plains has one for around $ 788 up to $ 1,454.

I bet one of the sub-cuts (JD2210, Kubota 2310 ect) with a 5ft deck will cost about the same and come with 4wheel drive and a diesel motor.

I mow about 4 acres weekly. I use a 26hp with a 6ft deck, I wouldn't want to use less. With trim'n and weed eat'n I spend as much as 4 hours (usually closer to 3). Starting at 8 I finish about noon. Has anyone told ya it stinks to be in the sun in Houston in August at noon?

Yes, it will do fine. The big question is how much time do you want to spend? I'm not being sarcastic here, because I enjoy time spent mowing, but some do not. I own 3.5 acres, mow all except for house, drive, etc. with a BX 2200, 60"MMM, and it takes me a little over two hours (not counting trimming weedeating, clean up.) I'm guessing the JD would take you 4-5 hours. Can you live with that?

What kind of a price range are you shooting for ?

I can Buy a new Kubota BX1500 for

$6200 for just the tractor
$7300 with a 54'' mower.
Didn't get a price on a 60'' mower.

Power trac has a base model for $5500.
Don't know their prices for mower attachments but you can look them up on their webb site.

Why would a John Deere with 2" larger deck (62" vs 60") take twice as long as a Kubota? Help me understand that one...
