I have a L3400 with 463 FEL.

If I have a choice of pushing or pulling with the bucket, which direction is stronger? Or does it make any difference to the FEL, the FEL mount, and the hydraulics?

i would think u would want to push with the bucket because it is designed to dig and scoop in the forward position. but that's jmo

The tires will factor in. If you have directional tires like ags (R1) or industrial (R4) they are made to go forward and traction is not as good in reverse.

However there are a lot of situations when it is easier to drag backwards.

If you are talking about back draging with bucket curled down all the way, its a little risky. I know you can get a little more traction and smoothes the area better. Pistons are fully or close to fully extended and if you are back draging and hit stump or something and going fast enough, you could bend pistion rods. I did, not on my koboata but on bigger Case tractor. Hard lesson learned. I do back drag some, but limited and make very slow and no objects in way. I think the manual even has pix of back draging with bucket curled out all the way and says thats a no no. Hope i understood you';re question.

So it appears from the posts so far that it is better to push than pull, except when it is more convenient to pull. It also sounds like the FEL is strongest when the pistons are contracted.

The answer is lifting!

But seriously, the FEL is a loader, not a bull dozer. It is not made for dozing and will eventually crack the mounts if used as a dozer. The engineering design of the loader gives it the greatest strength when pushing, which is what happens when you drive into a mound of dirt to fill the bucket. Curling the bucket slightly as you go into the material helps.

Hi Miles,
Hope you are enjoying the new tractor. If we are talking pushing/pulling loose piles of brush I don’t think it makes much difference. It is easier to push larger piles so that the brush isn’t getting caught up in the front tires. Now if we are talking small trees with the idea of popping them out of the ground then pushing wins by a land slide. A combination of getting the edge of the loader bucket into the dirt at the base of the tree while exerting forward pressure and then curling the bucket to pop the tree will work best. Curling the bucket, breakout force, will be the most powerful function your loader will provide.
