Is it possible to make disc(s) for harrow/plow out of other things or used junk.

Stuff like-
Brake rotors
Drums work
Steel truck rims
(sounds like it may be to much work to modify though)

Saw someone on here post some disc they made, I assume they cut flat steel out on a cnc type machine and bent them to concave.

I think the steel truck rims are a cool idea. They wouldn't have the bite of a real disk but would break the soil up. Just need to weld a bunch on a shaft and set it to a angle.

For one thing they would just roll on top of the ground and you might as well just drive a truck over your field with no tires. If you did shape the rim into a disc, it would wear out in less time than it would take to forge it to shape. I spent 1.5 hr last night just drawing out a piece of steel 1/4 x 1 1/4 to 1/4 x 3/4 and shaping a knife out of it and did not finish the rough forging. I am not a great smith buy any means and a better smith would get done faster but that blade was little compared to a disc blade.

Perhaps you could build a frame and just buy the disc blades. Having recently resurrected an old disc, I can see what goes into them. It may just be easier to fix up an old one. Sometimes, however, a person just has to build something to say he did it... and I can appreciate and respect that!

I think the idea of old break rotors on some kind of frame that you could use to angle them and add weight to them would work. Adding a water tank on top that could be drained when not in use or a box that you could put concrete plates in would help.

There is more to the shape and material of the disks than one might think. I would take the advise above to just fix up an old disk and save it from being a lawn ornament.

many things are possible, but I would suggest talking to the scrap man, or some farmers in your area and see if they have used disks, that have been replaced, I had stacks of them until I let the scrap man have them, for my disk they were wore out, but could have been usable for a smaller unit, and at old farm auctions most old small disks the only person biding on them is the scrap man.

there are plenty of harrow disks available through online sources for good prices, too much trouble to make your own.
