Is their a noticable difference gas vs diesel

There has to be a good reason for running them faster now. I'm thinking either broader torque spread over the slow designs or possibly something along the lines of the difference between 540 and 1000rpm PTOs- equipment operates at the same speed but more torque when you need it. Or so I've been told. All of my stuff runs at 540, but I've been looking into 1000rpm-driven mowers.

My Ford 3000 runs the PTO at 540 when the engine's at 1800, my 484 is just over 1900rpm, and the 584 MFWD is somewhere close to 2200. There's gotta be a good reason for running the larger 584 faster than the 484 to spin the shaft at the same speed and they'll all fairly old machines (but not by 8N standards).
