I'm an owner of 2320 and if I had open field space, there's no doubt I'd buy one. They look like a real tractor. They feel like a real tractor. And they perform like one too. I'm a little disappointed in general with the way tractors are headed, both in terms of the way they look and the way they operate.

I'm in the midst of a debate about whether to invest in a belly mower for my 2320 ($2700) or just buy a lawn tractor to mow my 3/4 acre of grass (there's plenty of other work for the 2320). Test drove some JDs today and they're twitchy and uncomfortable. Too bad the Toro/WheelHorse is $3500 new - but at least they still make them!

Truthfully, if I won megabucks or powerball, one of the first things I'd do is buy a piece of property with open fields - just so I could justify a 790/3005. There. I said it.

I've mowed 1.5 acres with a walk behind 42" mower... :) (A 17hp DR with the 42" deck option).

Not sure I'd invest the $$ on the MMM but you will get a great cut compared to almost anything else less than the deck. If you don't have obstacles you could get a RFM. I have a 62C MMM on my 2305, and a 7 Iron 72" MMM for my 3720. On the 3720 I got an 84" RFM since pulling the 72" MMM on and off was a pain.

I think your MMM attachment is like the 2305, and you have the nice height cut dial like the 2305 so Taking it on and off isn't an issue. You WILL want to take it off to do serious tractor stuff to: 1 - Not bang it up; 2 - Not have it get in the way of what your doing. See if the dealer will let you try one (probably not). I think you'd like the cut.

And on an open field 'finish' (Not rotary) cutting I'd put my 2305 up against a 790 or almost anything. It's so low/stable that it'll mow great. I can mow faster (Speed wise) on my 2305 than I can with my 3720 cab due to height, weight, bouncing, etc. I make up for a slower possible speed with width (84 vs 62) on my 3720.

I do understand the 790 lust though. I almost bought one once (Ended up getting a 3320 open). I'd still love to pick up a used one in good shape, or better yet - I also have the same attraction to the old 990s - 4 cylinder, simple, bulletproof in every respect. And the 990 had planetary gears in the rear like the 4000 series. :) the new 4005 just doesn't cut it since it only has a 2 speed hydro.. :)

I love my 790 but I think Roy Jackson says it best...

No argument from me.

My dad and I have a 790, which he keeps at his house.. I have a 2320.. I love both, but after driving my 2320 most of the time you do get spoiled with the hydrostatic transmission.. the 790 felt a little bit more stable on some of my slopes as well..

IF you go with the MMM, get the 62D rather than the 54d (d = drive over deck) - it is so easy to take on and off.. Every now and then I have trouble getting the pto hooked up, but 8 times out of 10 i can get it on the first try..

When i mow i do take the FEL bucket off (once again easy to remove), but I do not take the FEL frame off the tractor..

I thought the 790, or whatever it was, maybe a 990, was nearly identicle to the older 1070 until they redesigned it to the 3000 something. Controls were almost nearly identicle as was most everything else.

Regarding the PTO, if you're attaching/detaching an implement to the mid-mount PTO, place the MBR lever to the rear PTO. The mid-mount PTO will spin freely making it easier to attach the PTO shaft. Vice versa for the Rear PTO, place the MBR lever to the Mid-Mount PTO position for attaching/detaching rear implements.
