A local dealer has a TC40D HST w/FEL and 2500 hours listed for $14,300. The tractor is in great shape although I am not exactly sure what year it is.

So, is this a good price or should it be better? What would you offer for it?

Thanks, I will check those out. Yes, it is a 4wd.

I think it is a little high for that many hours. I bought my 2005 TC40DA HST with FEL, 300 hours for $13,000 in 2008. You can get a newer TC40DA with less hours off of Tractorhouse for less than $15,000.

I agree with Randy. I'd offer him $12k and see if he will take it. He'd have to give me a warranty to get me above $12.5k. Even at $12k, I'd go over it with a fine-toothed comb. You can drop $1k to $2k in repairs on one of these in a heartbeat. If the PTO clutch is weak or the front axle's differential is in need of service, you'll spend that kind of money in a hurry. Also, if the loader is loose, these older tractors do not have replacable bushings.

I have done a good bit of research on this tractor and with what you guys have said as well, I am going to take a look at it later today with a list of items to check closely. So far here is what I have:
1) Frontend leaks?
2) Loader wear.
3) PTO Clutch
4) Hydro drive
5) Electrical components

Any other thoughts????
Thanks in advance.

Spoke to the dealer and he said it is a 2001 model, one owner tractor in great shape with no issues. As for price he said $14k which seems a bit high, I was thinking $13k at best.
Is 227 hours/year a lot on a tractor like this?

Any known issues with the 2001 model year TC40D?

In 2001, that tractor sold for around $20k with a 3 year warranty. I'm inclined to agree with you that an 11 year-old tractor with no warranty and those hours is overpriced at $14k. I think the price is high because these tractors were popular and have been discontinued. New Holland dealers may be putting a premium price on them. I'd offer him $12k and negotiate from there.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't notice that I'd already posted to this thread. I'm glad to find out I'm consistent in my pricing suggestions.:D

Thanks for the feedback, I have been researching this tractor a lot and you have posted some great info about it, which is much appreciated. I know I will use it a lot for a couple of years while I am building and landscaping my home after which time it will primarily be used to maintain fields and odd obs, so I really don't want to but something new if I don't have to. I have looked at the Kioti DK40HST w/FEL and it is priced at $21,500, so with the money I can save going used, I could pick up a nice Zero-Turn in a couple of years to mow with.
Again, thanks for informing me about this tractor, I plan to go and look at it this week.

See if he will let you bring it home and try it out for a week or so. Does not hurt to ask. A few more hours on a 2500 hour machine will not decrease the fair market value.
