I have about 1 acre of land with a fairly large ditch. I am looking for a quality tractor that is going to last me for years. After comparing the Cub, Husk, Kubota, and Simplicity. I found what I feel is a great deal on a John Deere X520. The Deere has a liquid cooled engine, 54" deck, aggresive tread rear tires, larger wheels, psoit track, and a repitale dealer. I think this tractor is a bit more than what I need but with the warranty and the deal I have on this tractor I don't think I can pass up the deal.

Thoughts? on the JD X520?

Welcome Savart. Is that $5,300 MSRP? If you haven't already, the JD web site lets you build and price your tractor, thereby giving you MSRP.

I've heard other members say that you should be able to get 15% - 18% off MSRP on a CUT. I don't know if that rule of thumb applies to garden tractors such as the 'X' series.

That tractor is pretty good. It would serve you well.

But, if you really want one to last you a lifetime, reduce your maintenance burden, and save a little money. Look for a low hour (<1000) JD 455, or 445, or 425. Way better tractor. Comparable to the new x700 series. No, you won't get a warranty. But, it is very unlikely that you'll need it either. These can be had for as little as $3000 (425's).

The older 400 series is all shaft driven (drive and mower), has real hydraulics, can be fitted with awesome attachements including 3pt., are liquid cooled (quieter, longer engine life), Heavy and stable.

For my money, I'd take a used one of these over anything short of an x700 series.

I have a 425 all-wheel steer. Been using it now going on it's 17th season, 900 hours. I spent a grand total of $75 on repairs (ignition module in year 3). Never changed a belt. Mows very fast. Moves snow like a dream too. Add/remove any implement without any tools. Mower on/off in just a couple of minutes. Real easy maintenance. Everything still works like new. Quietest tractor I've ever been around.

I like the 400 series mentioned above but for one acre and buying new that is a reasonable deal. That is about 20% off I think, probably not going to get more off than that on a riding mower.

I don't know what the blade tip speed is but this is a fast riding mower with a forward top speed of 7.2 mph. If your yard was smooth and open you should be able to cut in about 30 minutes. So you should have limited hours per year and with good maintenance and no abuse it should last for quite a spell.

I would like to get my hands on a 455 AWS; but
they are hard to find
in Colorado.
I couldn't find one
when i was looking.

so I went with this for $5250 tractor and mower.
After having it a little over 2 years I'm very glad i didn't find a JDx455 as there is no way I'd trade the BX1500 for one.

Yup... it wouldn't be a real fair trade. 'Course it's not really an apple for an apple comparison, either...

That said, you done well with that purchase - sorta fell in - and came up roses! :D
