No, 7 mph is too slow for lake driving in winter. I might put tracks on a high-end Polaris Ranger at some point in the next couple of years, though.

A pathology? Let's see, what's that called when you keep repeating the same actions and expect different results?

Yep, I agree. But there is another variable, the snow melt.

Yesterday after supper I struggled through a half-mile of dreadful snowshoeing conditions to reach the stranded MF35 with the winch where I had left it after the Ranger extraction. What was agony for a shoeshoe walker proved not so bad for a tractor. Pushing an underbelly-wake of soft snow, it slowly worked its way down a slight slope to the paved road a half-mile away.

The winch-tractor now rescued and a path cut to the vicinity of the Bolens with the blower tractor earlier in the afternoon, I extricated the little one with the winch. This was no small feat: the snow was very deep in this area and not all layers were soft. The Bolens didn't tip, though I had to back it up against the cable repeatedly and reset the steering so as not to damage the front end during a one-man tow. Eventually I was able to drive it down over a steep bank and onto the new road.

The Bolens then snuggled into the shop next to the stove for the night.

Yeah, not to be a spoiled sport, but that's a pathological thinking pattern when you try driving a tractor over the snow the same way you'd drive on bare dirt. Unless you've been driving it over the snow all season long, the snow's not packed enough to hold the tractor up; with results as seen in your pictures. That's one reason why I'm still carrying my sap buckets out by hand. (Of course I only have a dozen taps out, which makes it manageable that way.) ;-)

Ok, I'm curious. If I may ask why do you have visitors from around the world?
And do you tap maple trees to actually make maple syrup?
Family members know a lot of grad students from Queen's University in Kingston and tend to recruit them to gather sap. In subsequent years quite a few Parliament Hill personnel made their way to the sugar shack on the farm.

Wow. Did I see that right. A response after 7 years?

Back on the topic, When are you buying a Kawasaki Mule on tracks?
Late answer to your question: in 2020 I bought a Kioti Mechron PS. I did not purchase tracks for it, though they were available. It works quite well for most of the winter, towing a triangle of tires around to maintain trails.

Why am I back here? I blew a head gasket on my Bolens G174 this morning and I need to find one. For a 1980, 2 cylinder Mitsubishi diesel engine, Amazon does not offer anything useful.
