Is this normal for JD B

Hi, just purchased a 1950 JD model B..it runs great, had the distributor
rebuilt and carb tuned. The question is, when I run the tractor in 5th gear
and go down a grade in the road, the tractor idles down even with the
throttle lever in 3/4 open. Is the govener kicking in, or is it starving for fuel?
as soon as it slows down, the speed picks up and runs great.
It doesnt miss when it slows down, it just acts like I have pulled the throttle lever back.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Great engines. My neighbor used a 2 banger engine to run his sawmill.

You will have a lot of fun with that tractor I expect. They are a big hit in parades these days.

I don't know much about the mechanical things about the old 2 cylinder J.D.'s (other than running them as a kid), but it sounds as if the governor on your tractor is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

If it didn't cut the throttle back going downhill with the throttle opened the engine would quickly over rev with all of the unpleasantness that would entail.

As long as it opens the throttle again when it returns to being under load, i.e. going back uphill, I'd say your machine is working fine.

:thumbsup: thanks guys for the information. I knew I would find the right answer on here. I was hoping that it was working correctly. My grand father had one of these when I was a kid. And since I was born in 50 and it was in good shape, I picked it up. And glad I did.
