I have few areas that I would like to till up. I thought of using my walk behind tiller, but it really beats me up. So, I thought I would rent a 60in 3pt tiller at the local rental yard.

Turns out, the tiller rental is $175 per day. The rental guy told me I would have to reserve it as it is in high demand. I found this hard to believe at this price. What do you think ?

I think he just gave you justification to go buy a used tiller. One day's rental fees will more than pay for it.

It's only too high if yournot willing to pay it!!!

Ozarker,

Please let me know where you can buy a used 60" tiller for $175. I'll buy all you can find at that price, sight unseen.

My new 52" Bush Hog Tiller was about $1500, IIRC. A used one at half that price would be a good price.

Just my two cents.

I paid $45 per day to rent a 48" tiller. Maybe 60" tillers raise the ante a little. I got rates from $45 to $80 per day on 48" tillers including a quote of $157 for a week. I had to drive an hour each way to get it but it was the nearest place to rent a tiller anyway. I guess if you can't find a cheaper rate you don't have much choice. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Don't get so excited Ron. I simply misread the post and thought it said $175 per hour.

Ok, now I understand. I misread stuff all the time myself!

FYI, I saw an ad for a guy locally that was willing to rent his aerator for $100 per day or he'd sell it for $1000. Both seemed to steep for me.

This time of year I think you can go to a TSC and buy a 60" King Kutter for under a grand brand new. I always favor buying over renting if it's something I'm likely to use more than once or twice.

Of course, that could explain my full barn and empty wallet. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It sounds high, unless its a weekend deal (pick up Fri. night, return Mon. morning). But I am inclined to think that if it was in high demand, that there must be a lot of maintenance, and/or he is getting what the 'traffic' will bare (bear?). For a 60" Deere tiller, I paid $75 for 3 hours.

For the guys in the rental business, they must decide what the traffic will bear, and if they don't get it right, they don't stay in business. Simple. If there was a way to monitor the hours of use, then the hourly rate may make more sense. Works better for something that has a motor on it.

The tiller I rented came to me with about two bushel baskets of heavy grass and weeds wound tightly around it, including about 20-25' of steel strapping. I cleaned it off before taking it back, and didn't ask for a discount. They noticed it was clean, asked me how many hours I figured I used it, and said the charge would $75. I don't know if that was a better rate than normal or not.

I live in Michigan and last fall I bought a 5 foot CCM tiller from a dealer in TN on this website and it was delivered to my house for a little over a grand. It was a little cheaper than TSC and it was already painted orange!
