Is this tiller too much for my L3400

I came across a potential deal on a tiller not far from me. It's a Befco T60 series that is very heavy duty and 74" wide. From the pics, it's in like new condition. Here is a link: BEFCO - Products - Rotary tillers - Till-rite T60

My tractor is a Kubota L3400. I know if I had my choice, I would be more interested in a 60" or 66" model but this one came up. It will be used on about 5 acres that I have been working for just a few years with a plow and disc. The plus side is the soil is on the sandy side and most of the rocks are smaller.

What do you guys think. Should I pass and keep an eye out for a smaller tiller or go for this beast?

I would definitely buy that tiller quickly as it is obviously in good condition.

The thing is that there is no reason you cannot till in shallow passes in a creeper gear as you have worked the land previously.


The added benefit is you can overlap and do half passes at depth too if you do not wish to attack it with 3 passes being the high middle and lowest settings on the depth guage skids.



As long as you have the L 3400 wound up to run the PTO and you have an limited slip clutch or shear pins and it has EuroCardan shaft I dont see any issues.

I don't think it will be too much. If it is, you can easily remove a row of tines on each end in short order. Ken Sweet

Thanks for the responses. Thought of removing tines if needed but hope it won't be. From what I've read, Befco is a first rate company any parts and support down the road would be no problem. At 81" over all width, 798 lbs and 8 3/4" working depth, this is a big boy.

I know of a very clean 2-3 year old Befco T50 that's for sale in north central OH if you are interested. I have been looking for a used T60 for my DX55 but have only found that T50 so far. I'll PM you with the details in case it helps you.

I am a total newbie with a 3 point tiller, but from my limited experience, it doesn't seem to take much power at all from the PTO. Worst case, you may have to run it a little slower than you would with a big tractor.

I tilled my wifes new garden spot Saturday. I put my 72" JD 673 as deep in the ground as I could get it and it ripped through a stand of Coastal that hasn't been turned in at least 35 years. My tractor is a 45 Horse, but it seemed to be no load whatsoever regardless of speed.

I will be really surprised if your tractor has any difficulty with it unless you have to deal with buried cables or rocks. In such a case, you would have trouble running it with most any tractor.

Even if it proves that you have a bit more tiller than what you need, then you can remove the outer tines and reduce the width of tilling. Then you'll have some extra tines when time comes to replacement.

I think you should buy it if it is in good shape when you see it. That is a good heavy duty unit. I have run my 673 Deere tiller with my 820 31hp with no problems at full depth, you should be able to run an inch deeper with your tractor no problems either.
