Mowed for the first time with my 1610 pulling the Maschio 60" finish mower. The drive shaft keeps popping out of the PTO shaft. The top link is adusted as short as it will go, but the angle on this is very steep upward from the tractor to the mower connect point..

Anyone with a 1610 or 1910 can give me advice on adjustments?

Maybe a few pictures would help. I run a rotary cutter on my 1610. My property is hilly so I run the cutter at many different angles. I also use the cutter at a higher angle to run backwards into tall brush. I have never had the PTO shaft pop off. This sounds more like a general PTO shaft question.

When you say the drive shaft pops out of the PTO shaft, is that the two halves of the PTO shaft or is it popping off the tractors PTO output shaft?

Well it appears that I have not got the mower drive shaft all the way on the pto shaft. For some reason I cannot get it to extend far enough to fully couple up with the pto shaft.

I have no experience with these. The drive shaft does extend a little bit. There is a plastic shield over it, and I cannot get it apart. Maybe it is rusty from sitting outside and needs greasing. I tried pulling it off the mower gear box, but it won't come. Is there some kind of release?

Sounds like you may need to buy a longer PTO shaft. There could a bolt through the shaft on the end by the mower gear box, like shown in this video:

How to Measure and Cut a Tractor PTO Shaft - YouTube

I am not sure why the shaft does not come apart like in the video. Perhaps someone else knows of a type that does not side apart. However still sounds like you need a longer shaft.

It could be a different problem. When I purchased my Iseki someone had painted the PTO shaft on the tractor. I had to remove that paint to get the PTO to slide on to the shaft and lock on to the shaft.

You should also consider installing an overrunning clutch and size the PTO shaft length for that.

Turns out the shaft was rusted from sitting, so it did not extend. I did get it apart, cleaned the rust, lubed and put back together. It went all the way on to the pto shaft, so the top link fit correctly.
