Hi Folks,
I've got to troubleshoot a power steering problem with a 537 tractor.

The steering goes very hard to turn after a steering lock. The pump has been replaced with a new one, but the problem keep occurring.

Any ideas please!

Attached pic is the replaced pump.

Please be more specific.
Do you mean you run out of power steering after hitting the maximum steering lock to left or right?
Is it to one side only?
Or is it a single turn of the steering wheel , then no power steering ,before you get to maximum steering lock?
What is the oil level before and after, when the power assistance fails?
Under what conditions does this occur?

It was working fine until the steering lock, then it started to get hard to turn the steering wheel.

is there a flow divider in the line to run something else? If there is I'll bet the spool is sticking, if not as was said re the pressure relief sticking............M ike

Hey Mikey,

What do you mean by "spool"? I tested the pump and thats good. Gonna bypass the engine and drive the pump with a drill and try to turn the steering. If thats works ok, well it the drive in the engine.

If there's a flow divider (which is used to split the flow between more than one function), in this case between the steering and something else, a loader maybe? there would be a spool internally in the valve. A spool is the rod, for lack of a better word, that moves back and forth inside the valve body to adjust the flow. You may not have one that's why I asked if you if you have another function.
I've had them stick when you deadhead something as the the valve is trying to compensate for no flow................Mike
