They also make some very nice painted extruded aluminum frame pieces for the top and sides that 2X lumber will slide right into and also incorporates flashing for the edge of the metal covering. I wouldn't build a sliding door without them. Makes the job faster, easier, lighter...all things that a good sliding door should be!

Where did you get the aluminium extrudes from. How much.

I built my barn doors from rough cut 1" thick boards. The white trim is also 1" thick, and holds everything together. When I bought the place the barn as boarded up with plywood. Just watch for shrinkage as the wood fully dries. Tongue and groove or shiplap joints will eliminate gaps. Tractor Supply has all of the hardware - rails, trolleys, end stops, door stops and guide wheels for the bottom edge of the door. I went with plastic Delrin wheels over metal wheels. The metal wheels are very noisy, the Delrin wheels are very quiet and make the doors easy to move.

I made my doors with 2x4's as the frame and used some leftover OSB on the outer sides both inside and outside. The OSB was screwed into the frame using Torx head deck screws. Both sides of the doors were painted to prevent rot and the board falling apart.

They've been up for 17 years and are still in pretty good shape except for where one of the horses decided to chew on it.

I built these myself for my barn last year. I bought all the hardware online and it went together really easy. Here are some pics that might help ya out. Good luck The bottoms are held in with hardware that for a lack of a better term is a U channel that bolts to the barn and keeps the door at a desired distance while opening. Rustic a Hardware was the vendor I ordered from. Hope this helps. image-3655059519.jpg image-3441699962.jpg image-528961509.jpg image-333748697.jpg image-3880176754.jpg image-1322954346.jpg

Buchanan CO-OP in Buchanan, MI but that was many years ago. I would check with your local or regional pole building supply outfit and they should be able to hook you up.

Built my barn door in 1998, used 2x6 for the 12 x12 frame, and plywood for the corner gussets. Hung matching metal siding after the frame was mounted. The rollers are a galvanized track and trolley. You definitely want to have a method of keeping the door close to the barn wall at all times, not letting the bottom swing outward. Many barns in my area have lost the doors in a good windstorm, some never re hung them because of the weight and difficulty involved.

The only latch I have ever used is a brass hook on a short piece of chain, never had a need to lock it, though it wouldn’t be hard to mount that kind of hardware. Still in excellent shape today, always thought I would have to rebuild it after a few years, but no need so far.
